A Little Bit About Me...

I have long had a love of learning, which has most recently expressed itself in my earning a BS in Psychology from Brigham Young University. This area of study gave me experience in the fields of math and writing, as I had to perform and analyze numerous psychological experiments, which includes performing statistical calculations as well as writing reports on findings. My teaching experience began in high school, where I tutored a girl in algebra. I also spent two years in Russia as a missionary, teaching people about my faith. While there, I also held weekly English language lessons open to the public. In college, I was also a Teaching Assistant, where I gained valuable experience when I had to fill in and teach class for the professor.

A Little Bit About Me...

I feel that repetition is one key that helps students grasp difficult concepts. I start by helping the student understand what the question is asking. Then I will do a problem step by step, showing the student what I am doing. Next, I will have the student do the same problem, but recreate the steps that I had shown them, guiding them along the way. After this type of practice, we will move on to similar problems, using the same steps that we previously used. I have found that this system helps me learn the information and retain it. I will be patient because I understand that these concepts do not come easily. My teaching style can be easily adapted to meet the student’s needs.

A Little Bit About Me...

I've never met a "stupid" student. I see all people as capable, as long as they are willing. I find it easy to get a student interested in a subject when they have usually been bored in class. I easily create metaphors and practical examples for application of the subject at hand so the student can personalize their studies. Once a student sees how the subject "fits" in their life, their interest level often changes.

While attending BYU I worked in the student advisement center part-time, mentoring and helping students develop their schedules, and tutored them in subject matter from courses I'd already completed. I served as a volunteer representative for the LDS church for two years in Denmark and Iceland. I speak fluent Danish and Norwegian, and I taught extensively on many topics to all age groups while over there. A Little Bit About Me...

After rising 3 children of my own I have come to realize that children learn at their own rates. It is important to encourage and persuade children to grow their skills. Often if learning is made into fun games and puzzles the children respond positively and will want to learn more.
