Hands-on, smiles-on!

Hey! My names Bethy! I'm 13 years old and in 8th grade. I've been tutoring since I was in 5th grade. I can tutor all ages in almost any subject. Last year I had the highest GPA in my whole school! I love teaching anyone who is willing to learn! I also teach children with learning disabilities and special needs.
I am very laid back and flexible. While I might be calm I only have 3 rules, 1. Be respectful, 2. the words "I can't" are not allowed :), and 3. have fun! I tend to create games based on the skills that are being taught and I'm not into lecturing, my approach is very hands. Learning can be fun!

please feel free to write me so i can help kids learn.

I am only 19 and i graduated class of 2011. I've had a lot of help when i was in school so i know it can be stressful and tough but i found it a lot easier when i got help from people. Kids may be shy or maybe they just find the work is to hard and there scared to get help but i'm easy and outgoing i don't force kids to do there work. It takes time for them to understand how to work things out how to talk to teachers.
I have plenty that i've been tought so maybe using some of them could help the students understand better.

I consider my style to be firm but loving. Children know what to expect from me because I'm consistent. I have high expectations of students and they have never yet disappointed me. My teaching hero was Jaime Escalante who taught poor, struggling, barrio students in Los Angeles college level mathematics in the 1980s. One of his beliefs that resonated strongly with me was "Students will rise to the level of expectation." I am passionate about teaching and in the process, inspiring children to reach for their dreams.
I have worked with children most of my life and have many years of experience with them, including independently tutoring two elementary students in the early 1990s. I spent two years as a substitute teacher for primarily Groton Public Schools but also Norwich and Waterford Public Schools. I am very good at teaching the foundational basics that an elementary stude ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I believe that education is a fundamental pillar in a person's life, that anyone can learn, and that people can teach each other. My goal is to help students learn what they need to be successful by using hands-on approaches where they can manipulate subject matter and "own it," meaning that they understand it thoroughly. I believe that teaching is reciprocal; in that I can teach for a student to learn and also that a student can teach me so that I can learn. I would strive to inspire a curiosity of learning and loving to learn by providing students with the experiences and opportunities to become comfortable with the material being studied. My motto for teaching is “Let go and jump in” because the only way students can learn and “own it” is by letting go of their fears in learning and get their hands into the subject matter.

For the past fifteen years, I have pursued my aims in the field of higher education. Most of my teaching experience has focused on children with special needs; however while studying at St. Joseph's College, I was particularly attracted to the subject of Reading. Immediately after receiving the Master's degree, I enrolled in the Six-year program in Reading at the University of Connecticut.
I truly enjoy working with children, and I welcome the challenge of working with students who struggle with reading. I regard reading skills as the key to success in the educational process, and I believe that given the proper encouragement, all students can achieve success in this area. I strive to be a catalyst in their success.

As a teacher, I am well aware of the many different ways that children learn. As I said previously, I have been art of both the middle and high school environment, and have worked with students of many different levels. Some children excel when given more time, focus, or a new take on their academics. I truly believe that tutoring is an excellent supplement to any child's education because I know from experience that every student truly wants to learn, just in their own way. A Little Bit About Me...

In my four years as a professional tutor at the University of Evansville writing center, I focused on improving all aspects of a well-written essay, including the researching process. I have a vast knowledge of the MLS, APA, and AP styles and have honed my grammar skills during my three years as a sports editor. Moreover, I have gained experience tutoring a wide variety of students by volunteering as an English as a Second Language tutor for three years and participating in the Just Read and Junior Achievement programs.
Learning is a team effort. I believe my experience as a Division I cross country runner has endowed me with a team mentality I use each time I tutor a student. Establishing a team setting reassures those I tutor that we will work together to achieve every goal we set. Because I have tutored students of all ages, I can easily identify what must be taught and ... read more
