My approach to teaching is more of a "why" approach. It is more important for students to know why something is or works rather than just how. This approach works well for middle and high school students. It allows students not only to understand the ideas taught but to apply them to other areas as well. I also like to use visual aids as well as conversation. I have found that many of us vary widely in learning styles. Some are visual learners, others are audio learners, and still others are a combination. I work well one-on-one but also enjoy small groups. Ever since I was quite young I have enjoyed mathematics. I went into the field of engineering to apply this love of mathematics and logical thinking to systems and products useful to our everyday lives, first as a Corrosion Engineer then later with a Master’s degree in the Biomedical field. I now use my love of the subject to encourage students, especially female students, in the elementary grades and tutoring at the local community college in all math related subjects, from business math through calculus.
