My comments on tutoring Algebra I : 8-12th grade, as well as adult learners. Algebra can be fun (I promise)!

I believe that all students can and will achieve academic success given appropriate instruction; i.e., instruction that is differentiated according to students' specific needs, learning styles, interests, and personal goals. As a classroom teacher and as a personal tutor, I have seen almost miraculous results in a relatively short period of time, both in terms of academic achievement and student confidence. Passion and enthusiasm for learning is contagious, and I am a carrier. For a dedicated instructor, nothing is more satisfying than watching a student "catch" the learning bug.
After attending (and teaching in) a graduate program in American/British Literature and Language at L.S.U., I realized that my true calling was teaching. I began teaching English, Journalism, S.A.T. Prep., Latin, and other subjects in Springfield, MA in 2003 in an alternative, urban high school. I t ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I try to bring a combination of educational and professional experience to every session to allow people to understand the world around us.
My name is Perry Miles. I have quite a bit of experience tutoring and have attended some of the best schools in the country. I went to the Newhouse School (at Syracuse University) and studied broadcast journalism to get my bachelors Degree before earning my Masters in Health Informatics from USF Tampa this past December. Since I have moved from the Northeast to Florida, I have been able to help students prepare for the school year and improve grades in all areas. I try to combine my educational background with my professional experience to interest the students and help them apply knowledge. "Half of knowledge is knowing where to find it."

After completing my undergraduate degree in English Literature at Florida State University, I worked as a substitute teacher in Hillsborough County for two years. In 2009, I completed my Master's Degree in Communication at University of South Florida while simultaneously employed at the Department of Special Education. I have been tutoring with Advanced Learners for 1 year and am currently an Adjunct Instructor of Public Speaking at HCC Dale Mabry.
Once while subbing, I entered a classroom where the students had been allowed to watch Jerry Springer on TV for the last two weeks. I couldn't let this continue, but I saw how emotional the class was about the show. I encouraged them to write their own talk show and told them we would perform it the next day. I find that connecting student's interest with the subject matter to be learned is the best way to teach.

My comments on tutoring Algebra I : Wyzant certified in Algebra I.

I have over 5000 hours (nearly 10 years) of tutoring experience, including the SAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT, LSAT and other selected subjects. I have been helping high school and college students get accepted to undergraduate and graduate programs all over the United States, including UF, Michigan, Stanford, FSU, UCF, and many others. My first teaching experience was with the Department of Juvenile Justice when I was fresh out of college. It was, believe it or not, a lot of fun! When I went on to Law School I was fortunate enough to be selected as a Teaching Assistant for Legal Research & Writing and Appellate Advocacy. I also tutored first year law students as a member of the Florida Law Review. Recently, I spent a quarter teaching bankruptcy law to paralegal students in Madison, WI, and had a great time doing so. My students seemed to enjoy it nearly as much as I did. Now that I am ba ... read more

Algebra I is one of my top subjects!

The experience I have gained while studying Education and Psychology, along with administrating exams for Wonderlic Scholoastic Testing and tutoring has enabled me to learn through understanding, hard work and dedication. I have learned through extensive courses in Psychology on how we learn, education courses that break learning down, and working with children and adolescence for over ten years with tutoring and patience, that with the proper tools and guidance, anything can be achieved.
I believe that implementing the right tools, along with clearly stating what the student needs to learn, along with discussion, will ensure student success.Using multisensory resources, creatively using the newly formed knowledge, along with pre-testing will foster memory and recall.

My comments on tutoring Algebra I : Florida Virtual School Algebra 1

Tutoring is not my part-time job, it is a full time endeavor. I tutor in many subjects including Elementary, Middle and High School curriculums. I tutor all ages. By working with my students, their parents and teachers, we formulate a plan and goals for our sessions. Sometimes I am a tutor for a test, or a coach for a project or a study skills adviser. I have experience working with students with ADHD and those with specific learning issues and IEP's.
