I have tutored non-professionally for some time. Doing so has provided me with experience with a variety of students ranging from the first grade level to college freshman. I cater accordingly to each level of student, always exercising patience and approaching topics from multiple angles. I understand that some students are visual, kinesthetic, or auditory learners, or a combination of all three. Teaching is a means to find a student's misconceptions and correct them. I try to do this by engaging the students in conversation, asking them leading questions, or watching them work. I try to build classroom bonds, making communication easier. Once the students feel comfortable, it is easier to get them to talk and share their actual thoughts and ideas (which might be brilliant or flawed).
