Critical thinking skills and untraditional ways are what I focus on. However the way someone learns, I will try to set the individual up to show how they learn and work with them. I will implement practices and materials I think will fit the student's profile. I feel a teacher wears many hats and you must be prepared to wear a different one any day.
I have been a tutor for 23 years and I have taught Adult Basic Education for 12 years. I am still continuing my education to receive a Masters degree and plan to get my PhD. My comments on tutoring ADD/ADHD : 2-3 years as a substitute teacher.

I started out tutoring elementary students in basic math and English grammar while I attended college part time in the 1980's. I continued tutoring young students and adults in the 1990's, tutoring Basic Math, Basic and Intermediate Algebra, Basic Geometry, English Composition, Speech, Study Skills and the Sciences. In addition, tips were given to enhance test-taking skills in hard-to-Ace subjects like Economics. I have tutored for the Sickle Cell Organization in 2001, helping students catch up numerous missed assignments. I tutor when the opportunity presents itself. I began tutoring privately,as well as,for my school's learning center during the early 1990's. I have continued tutoring privately on and off for the past twenty years. I was a substitute teacher in California and Michigan during the 2000's. I also had my own high school level classroom in California for two school years. I was hired on an "Emergency Credential" because I had my BS but no teaching credential. I was laid off due to budget cuts in June of 2003. A Little Bit About Me...

I find that the most important aspect of teaching is to consider the student's perspective. It wasn't that long ago that I was a student myself, and I found the most effective teachers were the ones who were able to explain concepts in a variety of ways. Along with this I find it import for a teacher to fully understand a question being asked by a student. I have had teachers give me incorrect answers to questions because their was a communication disconnect. Exercising patience and understanding cannot be over emphasized. I try to give students a good understanding of a theory, concept, or method which can be applied to solve a variety of problems or answer a variety of questions.
