Better academics combined with more fun is the goal.

I have helped friends (and their children) to prepare for exams since when in high school I won various awards for my performance on exams. I won the top score for the Regents exam for Duval County in 1971 and for this I was recognized by the downtown Rotary Club. Also I won the top statewide scholarship award for the Chamber of Commerce and for the N.H.S. due to performance on exams. Also I won the Merit Scholarship award. I have only recently started to do tutoring for pay. Over the years I have helped my children, my grandchildren, and friends and others to prepare for exams ranging from kindergarten phonics up to and beyond SAT exams.
I consider it my duty to do what it takes to make the tutoring FUN for the person being tutored.

A Little Bit About Me...

After graduation in 2008, I worked for the past year and a half in St. Johns County Schools as a 4th grade intervention teacher and in 5th grade ESE. As an intervention teacher, I worked with the lowest 20% of the 4th grade to help bring classroom grades and test scores up. This meant teaching the general curriculum and also strategies and test taking skills. I headed up the 4th grade tutoring program where I taught my own curriculum to help students prepare for the FCAT. While at Flagler, I tutored privately in all subject areas. I have taken several mathematics courses and have been trained specifically on how to teach math to students. In order to pass my Math Certification, I had to prove my math skills through a 9th grade curriculum.
I am a huge advocate of differentiated instruction, which allows all children to be taught and assessed on the same overall material, but at diff ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I began teaching in 1998. My previous job was taken away by forces of nature. I had taken advantage of the Military Troops to Teachers Program with no clear pathway to practice. Until I found myself with a possibility of unemployment. I I applied at a correctional facility and I was hired over the next week. Hence my introduction to the classroom and the world of academia. Over the next five years I was fortunate enough to teach both classroom and computer lab, loving the challenges and accomplishments more and more everyday. My students were adult learners whom appreciated accomplishing life goals. I continued educating over the next seven years with results that were uplifting and inspirational. Teaching requires a heart.
My teaching style is a type of facilitator approach. I realize the with every classroom there is middle level of learners the same as lower and higher ac ... read more

I have always had a gift with teaching. I have conducted many training programs with the companies I have worked. I have taught college level management courses with Keiser University in Daytona. I am very gifted in Math and have tutored several students to assist them in understanding the importance of math in the real world.
I am a believer in the old adage,” You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink.” I believe that it‘s the instructor’s job to try to motivate the student to learn the subject. The instructor need to teach the student that the information is important and worth the student’s time. If the student is not motivated to learn then the session will not be as productive.

I graduated from UNF in 1993 with a Bachelor's of Business Administration in the field of Management. The degree required classes in Accounting, Finance, Algebra and Economics. Mathematics has risen to be one of my preferred subjects, tutoring this subject for a year to date.
I do believe that all children have the ability to learn the subjects however not all children are in the right mind to do so. My goal is to show in real world, understandable terms the subjects we will work on. I believe that if a child is explained the rules in terms and words he/she understands, then he/she will grasp the material and carry it with them into the future rather than trying to cram for an exam with no retention.

A Little Bit About Me...

I like to break things down to the component level in order to show the inner workings and the why of things for a more complete understanding. However, not all students are interested nor need to know the inner workings of things to succeed so I adjust my style to suit the student's needs. I do enjoy that "Aha!" moment when I've been able to break through a student's barrier and help them see the how and the why of something. It makes my day when that happens. I often hear students tell me; "I wish they would have taught me that in school!". I'm not sure if everything needed to succeed in school is being taught in school but I'm glad to be able to help someone in accomplishing their goals.

When a student needs tutoring, there is a breakdown in the understanding of the subject. As a teacher, I find out the individual student’s thinking process and make it click for that particular subject. Quite often it is just a small portion of the process that is missing or the process does not make sense to the student. Breaking down the process step by step and using examples makes it easier for the student to get to the correct end results and understand how he or she got there. Understanding is the key.

I believe that all students can learn. It's just a matter of finding the instructional style that matches their learning style. I am a firm believer in the theory of multiple intelligences, developed by Dr. Howard Gardner and adapted to the education field by Thomas Armstrong. It's not how smart you are, but how are you smart! To me there is nothing better than seeing the lightbulb go on in students' eyes when they "get it." My job as a teacher is to figure out how to bring each individual student to that point and guide all of them to reach their fullest potential.
I have 19 years experience as a high school teacher. In that time, I have taught several different English classes and reading. I believe in making learning fun. Young students need to be constantly engaged during the leaning process. All children have the capacity for success and as a teacher its my job to give them the scaffolding they need to achieve it. If a student starts with the basics they can build on that to achieve great things. All children have different learning styles. If a teacher can find a style that works for their student they can not only help them with the task at hand, they can also give them tools to continue successfully on their own. I believe in teaching children how to teach themselves.

A Little Bit About Me...

I began my teaching career as a writing/reading tutor while attending Ramapo College of New Jersey. During this time I was working in the English Lab, and was responsible for helping students improve their skills in researching and writing essays, compositions and research papers. After graduating from Ramapo, I entered the field of aviation, where I earned a certificate as a Certified Flight Instructor. I have been teaching various aviation related subjects for over 5 years. Most recently, I have been living in Daegu, South Korea teaching English as a Second Language to Korean students between the ages of 6 and 18.
I consider myself easy going and fun. In my experience as a teacher, I find that the most effective results come through what might be called "gentle guidance" rather than a more dictatorial style of teaching. I believe that children love to learn new things and are cur ... read more

I most enjoy working with middle and high school students. Usually, they are able to break down complex problems and think abstractly. When I work one on one with a student I am patient to understand where they are in relation to their struggle in comprehending a particular concept. I tend to go back and break down the concepts into singular parts and go through each step with the student so that it will later stick with them. Encouraging them along the way and celebrating their understanding of each step in the process boosts their confidence to further complete the problem, or task, at hand.
I have volunteered in middle school, high school and college ministry with River City Church in Jacksonville over the last four years.
