A Little Bit About Me...

I love working with anyone who is willing to learn. It is a passion of mine to educate someone further on a certain subject, and to see them use what they've learned, not just for school but for situations outside of school as well.
I recently earned my bachelor's degree in English, from Iowa State University. I have always helped friends/peers with English courses, whether it be writing, editing, proofreading, etc. I have also helped many people with music, being a musician myself. I have studied musical theory and played several instruments since I was in elementary school. I would feel most comfortable tutoring in music and English subjects.

A Little Bit About Me...

My approach for each class is to focus on the text and do exercises that give students the opportunity to work with the text first-hand. I focus on troublesome areas and I spend many hours planning each class. I prefer to let students come up with their own decisions, and craft their responses into the key ideas of the lesson. I believe that flexibility is key, and this strategy makes the students feel comfortable with discussing and thinking on their own terms.
I am currently a teaching assistant for the Simpson College English Department. I selected the books for the semester, drafted the curriculum, and I instruct classes. I also hold advisory office hours. I teach poetry, fiction and nonfiction. In addition to these things, I am a poet and fiction writer with a high level of experience and craft, and can assist students in expressing themselves creatively.

My teaching philosophy mirrors my learning philosophy. I believe in using a variety of methods and media to reach students on a level they can understand. Knowing that not all students learn in the same way necessitates an understanding of individual facilitation as well as group facilitation. I believe in creating an environment that creates curiosity and engagement that will result in long-term learning outcomes.
