A Little Bit About Me...

I believe in taking a casual approach in tutoring. From previous experience, I have found that many times students understand the material but tend to get flustered in a classroom environment. I provide guidance when needed, but sometimes students just need someone there to talk it out with them. If this is the case I like to ask questions until they find the answers themselves. This method not only teaches them the material, but also builds confidence because they realize they can figure out much of it themselves.
I worked for Kankakee Community College for one year as a Math and Spanish tutor in 2006 and 2007. During this year, I honed the mathematics I learned through high school as well as the four years of Spanish I had taken to that point. I graduated from Illinois State University in 2005 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology, and a friend recommended me for an assistant job within a special education cooperative. I accepted the position and continued doing this for five years. The time I spent doing this career is what ultimately made me realize my love for teaching children. During the first couple of semesters at Illinois State, I was able to substitute part-time, which was also a great experience since it allowed me to work in a variety of different classrooms and to teach diverse groups of children. I completed all tasks as assigned by the teacher, including the instruction of lesson plans adapted for specific students and groups of students.
