I also utilize "foldables" as study aids and on occasion oral testing. I have found that some students are more successful in comphrension hearing questions rather than reading questions. It also gives them a chance at telling me what they really know. They are allowed the freedom to explain the answer rather than writing one answer. It helps me get the "pulse" of the class.
