English Tutoring for Foreigners! Can speak Chinese!

I try to use a variety of materials that are both interesting and effective to learning how to speak authentic English. I encourage students to use their English at every opportunity and, when learning, to learn things in context, and not as some isolated phrase or word that may be harder to remember.
I taught English to preschool-age students and elementary school students abroad for a period of about 5 months and learned a lot in that short time. I also can speak Mandarin Chinese at lower intermediate level and lived in China for over 2 years. I have tutored through the organization Literacy Volunteers in Flagstaff and Lake Havasu. Additionally, I tutored English in a refugee camp in Zambia, when I was with the Peace Corps. While living in Bangladesh, I tutored adults and children in English, as well as other subjects. I taught for three years in Bangladesh at International Turkish Hope School.
My teaching style is to make sure that those I am helping understand what is being talked about. If they do not, we will keep working at it until clear. This means asking questions together and seeking out the fundamental answers to questions. I think all children and adults deserve a place to learn about themselves and the world around them where they are free to ask any question and challenge any assumption.
