SAT - Math is one of my top subjects!

With my graduate-level academic background in pure mathematics, I am well-prepared to guide students through the intricacies of mathematics. Moreover, my specialized training in mathematics education equips me with the pedagogical tools and strategies to effectively engage and support students in their mathematical journey. I have taught mathematics at the community college, university undergraduate, and high school levels (formerly certified to teach in the state of Georgia and province of Ontario). Having spent 25 years as a software professional (mostly in the financial services industry), I bring a blend of communication skills, real-world problem-solving expertise and teaching/mentoring experience. SAT - Math is one of my top subjects!

casual and laid-back but rigorous
I spent two years volunteering as a tutor at local elementary schools, working with students to succeed in math, reading, social studies, spelling, etc. In 2011, I was hired as a private tutor in Latin, and the student's test scores increased from a 70% average to a 94% average over two weeks. I was a straight-A student in high school, scored 2340 on the SAT (740 CR, 800 M, 800 W), and 36 on the ACT.

More About This Tutor...

I have noticed a couple things in my years tutoring people in math. I have noticed that many people have trouble with the fundamental concepts of fractions, decimals, order of operations, and adding/subtracting positive and negative numbers. If a student does not have these concepts together much of the 'higher level' mathematics can seem a blur and highly confusing. I have also noticed that students like real world or relevant examples when learning a new math concept. I like to find out what my student is into and tailor problems to things that affect their every day life. Practical real world examples can significantly increase a students retainment of concepts. I also make it a point to keep the learning environment positive and upbeat.

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style would focus on making sure that all children understand the basics of what they are doing before they can proceed to a more difficult level of study. A strong foundation is the best way to achieve excellence whether studying basic Algebra or Advanced Inorganic Chemistry. I believe in teaching through all different means from lectures, to hands on projects, to outings that are focused on the field being studied. I feel that the best way for a student to learn is to immerse the student with all of the different learning techniques there are. One good role model in a student’s life can really motivate a student and help them succeed in their dreams. This is why I strive to make a difference in student’s lives.

A Little Bit About Me...

As an undergraduate I formally tutored fellow students in several subjects, including biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics (from basic algebra to calculus). As a graduate student, I mentored several undergraduate students in the laboratory. Some of these experiences culminated in presentations of data at national and international scientific conferences. This trend continued when I became a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard, where undergraduates spent a summer in the laboratory learning about scientific exploration. During the past year I taught an undergraduate course (Brain and Behavior) at the University of Pittsburgh, which was a very rewarding experience. I look forward to the opportunity to help others achieve what they may have thought impossible, and providing them with the sense of confidence that comes from mastering material.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a proponent of two things. First, encouragement. I always encourage the smallest success before I point out any failure. I never get frustrated or upset. I never get angry or disappointed. I know that encouragement breeds success, and success is the goal. Second, I speak to children as if they know what I mean. In other words, I never talk down to them. I almost feel as if I might treat kids more like adults than I treat adults.
I have always been very mathematical, even though I did little to cultivate it. One of my favorite classes in college was a statistics course I took, and the other was a logic class. I love to read books, and I enjoy chess as a hobby. Teaching is my true passion, and I regret leaving a teaching job to pursue a law degree, and I can only hope to pick up where I left off. I was a teacher/counselor at a teenage group home for 4 years. This was the most re ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy teaching and coaching. Why am I effective? I talk to - not at my pupils. My non-threatening and non-intimidating persona allows me to quickly develop a healthy rapport. By listening to my students' thought processes, I work within their frame of reference and then offer suggestions to guide them to a more appropriate path. Finally, I always encourage and am highly adept at objectively critiquing without offending.
