A Little Bit About Me...

I am a graduate of Chico State with a BS in Computer Science and I was a student of their honors program. I was not a formal tutor, but I spent a lot of time with junior classmates helping them to understand their projects and meet their deadlines. After graduating, I worked as an instructor at Mendocino College. I taught computer science classes to young adults from different backgrounds and with different learning styles. I worked as an Instructional Aide at Charter Academy of the Redwoods. I worked with middle and high school students throughout the day and tutored individual students on occasion.

My philosophy of teaching is to train the student to think like a scientist and/or mathematician. It is not just about getting the right answer but rather understanding the fundamental principals of a subject. This enables the student to try previously unseen problems and succeed. I also believe in varying the techniques used. If a student has trouble with their teacher or text books approach, a different method should be explored. Imparting true understanding is a satisfying experience that I always aim for.

I have never been someone who "just gets it" when it comes to math or science, and so I understand more than many people who pursued degrees in these subjects just how puzzling they can be. Math seems like it is filled with "tricks" that seem impossible to know unless you were born with some innate gift. When I teach, I seek to show, step-by-step. how to think about a problem as more than a set of symbols on paper. I seek to impart the critical thinking skills that reveal why those tricks aren't tricks at all, but are instead a natural part of the grammar of math and science.
I graduated from Duke University in 2009 with a triple-major in Biomedical Engineering, Economics, and Mathematics. I have tutored in Economics and spent four years mentoring middle-schools students in Engineering as a Techtronics Fellow.

Few things give me as much pleasure as communicating academic concepts to students and seeing the look of understanding on their face. During my years at UC Davis I achieved a high level of excellence inside and outside the classroom, majoring in Economics with a minor in Communication as well as earning All-America Honors in Intercollegiate Golf. I began at Davis majoring in Physics, which led me to take many advanced level math and science courses, eventually settling on Economics, with which I became a master of statistics and through analytical papers developed excellent writing and grammar skills as well.
