My philosophy of teaching is to train the student to think like a scientist and/or mathematician. It is not just about getting the right answer but rather understanding the fundamental principals of a subject. This enables the student to try previously unseen problems and succeed. I also believe in varying the techniques used. If a student has trouble with their teacher or text books approach, a different method should be explored. A Little Bit About Me...

I have never been someone who "just gets it" when it comes to math or science, and so I understand more than many people who pursued degrees in these subjects just how puzzling they can be. Math seems like it is filled with "tricks" that seem impossible to know unless you were born with some innate gift. When I teach, I seek to show, step-by-step. how to think about a problem as more than a set of symbols on paper. I seek to impart the critical thinking skills that reveal why those tricks aren't tricks at all, but are instead a natural part of the grammar of math and science.
I graduated from Duke University in 2009 with a triple-major in Biomedical Engineering, Economics, and Mathematics. I have tutored in Economics and spent four years mentoring middle-schools students in Engineering as a Techtronics Fellow.

A Little Bit About Me...

The best word to describe my teaching is flexible. Students learn concepts in different ways. When each quarter begins and I hold my first discussion, I always start off saying that this time is the student's time. If my teaching style does not work with everyone let me know. If they want more example problems than lecture, I tell them to tell me to change it up. Also, if there is a hard concept to understand I try to explain it in multiple ways that get the same point across, in case someone does not understand it in one way, but may in another.
The number of years teaching and tutoring is a fuzzy area. I am a graduate student and I have been a teaching assistant for about 2 years, which consists of instructing laboratory, discussion hours and office hours.
