I realize that learning reading and writing skills can be difficult. When I teach young people, I work to push each person patiently but constantly to improve with each lesson. Each person learns a little differently, and I like to learn the student’s strengths and weaknesses and work from there. I support hands-on learning. There is only so much a person can talk about writing. The best way to learn writing is to write. The best way to improve reading comprehension is to read. Reading unlocks vocabulary. And a good vocabulary helps in written and verbal communication. My passion for teaching these skills comes from my belief that they matter and that I’m helping someone with a skill that will help them succeed.
As an editor working with young writers and as a college professor teaching students, I have spent most of my adult life passing on writing, communication and reading ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My entire background revolves around teaching. I taught in a Preschool while I was working on my Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. While there I worked with all ages from Infants to the School Age children. After completing my degree I then went to teach in a public school. The first year I taught and ran the Preschool Program of about 50 children, ages 3 to 5 years. The next four years I taught third grade where our emphasis was on reading comprehension, analytical thinking skills, and writing. After leaving the public school arena I completed my MBA and then moved on to teaching adults. Lately I have been working at a local hospital instructing Physicians, Nurses, Pharmacists, and Clinic Managers on integrating their new Electronic Health Records program.
My teaching style depends on the person I am working with and the subject matter we are exploring. Everyone le ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I have had several years experience of teaching throughout my schooling from college education, personal experience-being the oldest child/grandchild, daily experiences, and now being a parent of a young child. I've always known I would be a teacher. I loved my teachers growing up & I had a natural curiosity to know what it was like to help others. I hold 3 degrees-AA in Elementary Education, BS in Early Childhood Education, and MA-in Education. Even though I do have my degrees, I feel grateful to learn everyday. I feel that daily experiences make us smarter. I know that learning something new everyday makes me proud of myself and others, and very thankful that I have the opportunity to learn new things.
I believe children can learn in their own personal ways. I work with them to find their strengths/things they love, to help learning be more fun & productive. I teach t ... read more

I have home schooled my step daughter and a friends daughter for the last couple of years. I graduated with high honors (Alpha Sigma Lambda, Magna Cum Laude from Drury University. I have stayed in the same field for 20 years and am looking forward to helping children learn how to read and write the fun way. My goals have always to be able to teach children how important education is and how they can go about gettin an education that is useful. I have helped to encourage the two children I teach now to improve grades from near D's and F's to high B's and even A's.
Children want to learn. It is the job and responsibility of the teacher to show enough concern and ability to show these children how to learn. I try to always remember when I was younger and had a great deal of difficutly learning to read and write, how the teacher who helped me went about doing it so I could learn. She m ... read more

I believe teaching is best learned though practical examples (especially math). because I used to say the same thing that I'm sure that kids today are saying. When am i ever going to use this in my daily life? Its important to let them see the applications from knowing calculus based formulas to predict market declines (algorithms), to basic math in in inventory work, to understanding complex words and their proper sentence usage so they can understand what rudimentary or neophyte means in a job interview. Also, its important to inspire. most of the children/ teens in a tutoring course have been discouraged due to the fact that they are not picking up on a subject as quickly as their peers. That why its understandable that if they have someone to look up to, as i did, in a particular course they tend to do better and go beyond what they though originally possible.

More About This Tutor...

Having graduated with a degree in elementary education, I have learned the variety of students' learning styles and know how to target each child's unique style of learning. With a strong background in reading, English, and history throughout high school and college courses, I have been able to use engaging activities and multiple strategies to tutor and teach others. Foreign languages come easy to me as well, and I have particular interest in German and Spanish. When I volunteered at the Boys and Girls Club during college, I spent one-on-one time with students who needed help with their homework and thoroughly enjoyed this experience. I also have a minor in music and am willing to help with piano, guitar, or vocals.
My teaching style is is very "hands on." Once I know what learning style my student is,I manipulate my instruction according to their different learning styles wh ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a very patient teacher. If it seems someone is 'just not getting it' I will try a different approach. People learn at different levels, and what works for one does not always work for another; therefore, finding the way for each individual student is the key. I have also found that most people learn a task by 'hands on' learning, not listening to how it should be done. In this situation, giving someone the tools to do the work themselves gives them the confidence to do it, and feel good about conquering the challenge.
As a working professional, I was driven later in life to get a degree that was started right after high school. I initially had 90 course hours towards a Social Work degree, and when I returned changed it to business. I have a BS in Business Management, and I only have one class left to get my Masters(MBA). This has allowed me to have a vast bit of working exp ... read more
