I tutored middle school and high school students in math when I was in a high school, specifically algebra I and II, as well as SAT prep. In college, I helped students in calculus, biology, and statistics, as these are the primary focus of my undergraduate degree. I was also a Resident Advisor for 3 years, which lent itself to helping students with coursework as well as college life. Teacher with gentle touch - Very good at explaining new subj

I try to find the teaching style that is going to work for the student. Are they visual? Do they need to touch to learn? Finding out how to teach them and then helping them learn skills for independent study are just as important as the material.

A Little Bit About Me...

For the past two years, I have been working as an adjunct instructor and tutor in mathematics and computer information systems for a local Community College. This experience has been so fulfilling, that I am diligently pursuing a career change from Information Technology professional to teaching. I also taught mathematics for one year at a private school.
Students generally perform better with hands-on practice. I provide multiple opportunities for hands-on and guided practice as time permits. Associate new concepts to familiar ones. Our memories are largely associative in nature. Therefore, providing connections from new concepts back to well established ones increases our retention and recall. This is especially important in building up understanding in mathematics. Provide relevant examples. A student who is actively enaged in the lesson will learn more.

As a tutor, I try to identify the learning strategies of my students and then build off of those. For example, if I notice that a student is a visual learner, then I will try to incorporate diagrams, models, and schematics that can assist the student in understanding the subject matter or solving the problem. If, on the other hand, a student learns best by reading, then I will provide step by step instructions of how to find answers to various problems, or provide guidance as to how to identify important elements from a text. In any event, I try to show students several different strategies for learning or for approaching a given problem and let them determine which one makes the best sense to them.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that to increase knowledge and the understanding of a particular mathematics concept in class is the responsibility of every student, as well as the task of every instructor. As an instructor, I am always prepared to lead students in the direction that they should go to reach correct conclusions and answers. I believe also that student’s ability to solve challenging problems independently will help in their critical thinking. My ultimate goal as an instructor in the teaching of mathematics as a subject is to motivate, encourage and energize students to be active learners in mathematics and not just spectators in class. Because I feel that students’ participation in class is crucial for learning the subject mathematics. In addition, I always set some goals for students. I serve as a mentor and as a good friend to students. I tell my students that mathematics is not as hard as t ... read more

I have several teaching styles, and I typically adjust my style to better fit the student. For those students that crave discipline, I try to be very proactive and actively assign homework for them to finish prior to learning. For those students who have better self control, I try to stand back a little bit to let them develop their own creativity. Regardless of the teaching styles I may use, I am always accessible and patient. I always try my hardest to help the student to exceed.

There is no better of a feeling than to have a former student come back and tell you how much you helped them once they have went off to college. Showing students love and respect, as well as, treating them fair makes a difference when teaching. When students know that you care about them, that is when the student will put the best foot forward to learn.
As an undergraduate tutoring math, I realized quickly that I had a gift to explain math and make it easy for others to understand. My college professors asked me on several occasions to teach there class when they could not be there to teach. This experience inspired me to become a teacher. I love what I do and I am satisfied with my career choice.
