I think it is important to help learners make early connections to what is being studied through discussion of prior experiences and related meaningful discoveries. I like to teach using acronyms, graphic organizers, and other categorization strategies so that connections are made between nouns and verb structures. I have developed a visual but also mathematic style of teaching chemistry which relates every mathematic relationship involved in chemistry to a visual response or reaction. I've stressed practical thought, rational development, and scientific reasoning to ensure it becomes a second nature.
