I try to help students overcome their mental block about chemistry. Before a session begins, I like to determine a student's level of competency in the subject. Short quiz or maybe I'll ask you a few questions on the basics and then go from there.I help students learn concepts and don't really stress on memorization at first (but in organic chem memorization is important). Learning concepts helps one memorize equations and reactions better! Then, I show students how to "APPLY" those concepts to solve problems on their tests. With practice, this training helps them to get over their fear; focus on questions and solve problems like you would solve puzzles!!

A Little Bit About Me...

I have 16 years teaching elementary grades 1 through 3. During this time I taught Compensatory Education for 2 years in 1st grade, 4 years in 2nd grade and 1 year in third grade. In the Compensatory Education classes I would receive the poorest readers and worked with them throughout the school year. The 3rd grade Comp-Ed class all started as poor readers and ended the year by all passing the reading portion of the Texas TAAS test. I had a 1st grade class for 5 years and 2nd grade for 4 years. My preferred method of teaching is hands-on, through real experiments. Unfortunately, experiments cannot always be done, so I use lots of illustrations and age-appropriate analogies that are easy to relate to. Many times students are convinced that science is a subject too difficult to conquer, that they must just survive it, but science is all around us. I strive for that "a-ha" moment when a student realizes that all biological and physiological processes are interrelated and that the trick to understanding science is to build on previously learned concepts. I typically employ the Socratic method: asking questions to discover what the student knows (or thinks he knows) and guiding his thinking toward discovering the knowledge himself.
