I believe that education should present as much material to the student as possible, which includes using various textbooks, lecture, and inquiry. After that, it will be up to the student to assess and construct the information given in order to form his/her own opinion about the subject matter. True education and learning is ownership of the subject matter which comes through effort and discipline and a little bit of guidance.
Since April 2007, I have been a substitute teacher at both the Watkins Glen High School and Middle School. Frequent subjects include English, Psychology, and Physical Education. I belong to a writers group which meets at the local library every first and third monday. I belong to a chess club that meets at a coffee shop every Thursday. I also assistant coach varsity and college soccer during the spring and fall seasons.

I have been teaching for 21 years now (wow, that's gone by fast!) and I love every second of what I do. I have also been a tutor in the district for the past 9 years, tutoring every subject possible--math, English, Social Studies, etc. I enjoy tutoring because it allows me to get to know students who don't take French and also I love to teach other subjects outside my own area. One of the advantages of my background is the variety of people I have worked with. Regardless of different cultures, races, socioeconomic backgrounds and ages, I have the unique ability to connect with people in a language they understand. I utilize this ability to teach by analogy, as many of the things I teach and tutor others on involve complex subjects that the student usually has no direct experience in. Though teaching is not my profession, I have taught as guest lecturer in college level investment classes, as well as tutored one-on-one basic English reading to those unable to for LVA in the 90s. I have a BS in Accounting and a MBA in Finance. I have been working in the areas of Investment/Finance. I have improved my own ability to write effectively from the reading of poetry. In a written venue such as that, every word, space, and symbol has a purpose and meaning.

A Little Bit About Me...

Beginning in high school I found myself driven to help children in need. Through my participation in Mercy Action, I raised money for mentally delayed children, and set up numerous barbeques for them. Later, I began tutoring a young brazilian boy in the 5th grade. He needed help with all of his studies, especially math and english. As a political science major, I have gained experienced in essay writing, grammatical skills and research methods.
Before I was able to tutor, I taught 7 year old girls cheerleading. When I began to tutor, I enjoyed being one on one with the child. I am very patient, punctual and considerate. I know children that need extra help need extra time. I find it personally rewarding to supplament a child's education. I also believe it is easier for a child to ask questions when they are one on one with an educator.
