My experience in paid teaching (excluding numerous volunteer and non-paid opportunities) range from teaching Vietnamese refugee "boat-people" children (news film footage archived by Vanderbilt University) in 1975 through years of Orange County (CA) adult education in English as a Second Language to my present duties in metro Denver of teaching immigrant adults in English as a Second Language. My teaching style starts with the class. I follow manuals as far as they can take me, but I like to get a feel for the class, learn there interests and disinterests and use those as teaching tools. My philosophy is: you learn a second language to help you advance in life and in the global economy. Every single student has already learned a great deal without being taught; an educator’s challenge is to negotiate the various experiences and sociocultural influences to increase student awareness and use of those inherent, autonomous learning capabilities.
