Being an undergraduate at WPI and haven taken several Advanced Placement classes in areas outside of math and science, I consider myself a very well rounded student. I was also strongly considered for a MASH program here at the University, or "Math and Science Help", as a Section Leader/Tutor. Going through a lower-middle class urban high school, I was known as that "smart kid" and would often led study groups outside of class to prepare for tests.
I have struggled with the areas I am not proficient in, so I understand what it is to be frustrated and confused. My teaching style is presenting various approaches to the same idea, in hopes that at least one will click, and better yet, each approach with solidify an idea or concept that much more.

I am easy going, energetic, very passionate (especially when teaching calculus and physics), and engaging. In most cases it takes only a few sessions and students are having fun. I believe that most students can understand mathematics with a proper explanation. For example, the order of operations is usually presented to students without explanation for its existence. This gives the false sense that it is an arbitrary rule. I enjoy sharing my understanding to students, but I also enjoy providing a role model for my students. While attending the University of Massachusetts at Lowell I work to help other students that were having difficulty understanding the material presented. I obtained a bachelor of science in Civil Engineering, with a concentration in Structural Analysis. The course work gave me a very strong understanding of Mathematics, and Physics. Also, the quantity of lab reports I have written has given me an advantage in writing non-technical reports along with technical reports. I have worked as a college math privately and through other companies.
My teaching style is very simple and I believe it is effective. I have found that going through problems does not always help kids learn. I always try to tutor the basics and establish a plan for problem solving. The children need to know how to attach a problem not how to plug numbers into equations.

I first began tutoring under the direction of Nancy Donohue-Berthiaume at Quinsigamond College. I turored in Introductory Accounting, basic and college level mathematics. In my Sophmore symester, I was presented with a challenge. A young man who was both Dislexic, and Mathlexic was failing basic mathematics. In less then 1/2 hour, I was able to help him go from failing grades to straight A's. Later, I tutored fellow students in Pre-Calculus while taking the course myself. I ended up with a 4.0 GPA in that class. Each student requires a different approach to teaching. With this in mind, I prefer to sit one on one and work from the bottom up to try to figure out exactly where some of the issues may be. Once you better understand what it is the student isn't following, you must find a new approach to explaining the topic and reviewing it. I also believe the student must research answers on his or her own. The ability to memorize something is helpful, but it is more important to know how to find the answer or work through an answer. Often times students just memorize answers without understanding the buildup to the answer.
