My teaching style depends on the student. I am comfortable with trying different study methods in order to figure out why my student is having trouble with a particular subject.
I have a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a minor in Chemistry. I love being able to help students feel comfortable with the material they are studying. I have tutored numerous times throughout college, and would like to get back into tutoring students because I find it to be rewarding. As a student who went from living in Germany and being taught that there are many ways of getting the right answer, to moving to America where everything is taught in one way, I have learned to incorporate my tutoring skills to the need of each individual student. In tutoring any of the traditional subjects (Latin, Greek, formal/informal logic, rhetoric, critical thinking), I emphasize the objectives common to them all: (1) acquisition of context-specific vocabulary, (2) a feel for the flexibility and polysemy of a given word's lexical-semantic meaning, (3) a comprehension of the text's thematic, stylistic, and evaluative undertones and progression. As I entered college, I quickly was labeled a tutor by my friends. They would find me before exams so I could give them a crash course on what they needed to know before an exam. Little by little, I had a following of friends and acquaintances who were reliant on me to do well in their courses. I love opening students' eyes to the wonders of science. It is my experience that a student can learn anything, even the most complicated scientific theories, if the teacher is patient and engaging. In teaching, I find the key to unlocking the minds of the students is to find the appropriate analogy or metaphor. If a teacher can aptly relate a concept the student doesn’t understand to one that the student does understand, not only will the student learn the new concept, they will be far less likely to forget it in the future. After a few minutes, I ask them what they think is the best way to approach the problem.
