Passionate about learning.

I have experience as a peer tutor. Since I am an avid reader, I love all things related to books, vocabulary, literature and English. Biology is one of my top subjects! I am currently an university employed tutor in biology after attaining the highest possible scores in all general bio I, II and the corresponding laboratories as well as Primate Behavioral Ecology. If you are a struggling student, we can work together to make sure you succeed. This semester I will be adding general zoology and animal behaviors.

My approach is multimodal as all students are different. The one consistent element is that of an active learning environment. Passive memorization and repetitive tasks are not part of my repertoire as both have usually been unsuccessfully attempted by those seeking tutoring. I request a lot of participation from the student. Development of critical thinking is also a fundamental part of the tutoring environment. This skill alone will help students through all academic courses (and life in general). Although my expectations are high, we begin by building a firm foundation of study skills and habits which work to make these expectations attainable. My background knowledge in human cognition has given me invaluable insight into how we encode, retain and recall information.
As a returning adult college student, I have both classroom experience and life experience. My academic bac ... read more

Experienced Biology Instructor

I have been a high school biology teacher with the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system for over 3 years. I have also instructed BIO-101 labs at the collegiate level. I am proficient in the workings of the cell. My favorite subtopics would be protein synthesis, cell division and cancer, and genetic disorders. I have made great strides in getting minority students interested in careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
I focus on using real life examples to make biological concepts easier to understand. I'm all about simplifying science.

Don't fail because you're scared to ask for help!

Hands on. Using a board to explain concepts and then letting student take a try. Most students learn better by doing.
Chemistry tutor at local learning center. All of my students received a passing final grade ( so far)! I taught 19 courses of biology/anatomy to undergraduate students at ECU. This was the most joyful time in my career. I've discovered that chemistry is difficult because teachers only teach one way. It begins to click when a student hears the same info from a different perspective.

Biology is one of my top subjects! I have a BS in Biology from Queens University of Charlotte. I am also currently enrolled in the MS Biology program at Winthrop University. These educational experiences have prepared me to educate others on numerous topics within this subject.

Throughout my college career, I have developed study techniques which allow me to excel on exams. In the past, I have tutored high school students in preparation for the AP Biology exam in a formal setting. These students were all successful. At the end of the course, all the students felt the tutoring was helpful.

My comments on tutoring Biology : I completed the course with and A+ average and passed the final exam with a 98.

I was a straight A student throughout school. I am currently a high school senior, so the information is still fresh in my mind. I have spent a few semesters as a tutor and volunteer assistant in a local elementary school. I enjoy working with children and being able to help them succeed in school, because without school, the future is bleak!
I prefer a hands-on approach when possible. I lik to help the children relate to what they are learning in order to help them remember it.
