I believe that the purpose of tutoring is to help students help themselves, or to assist or guide them to the point at which they become an independent learner. I know that the content knowledge is an essential ingredient for a tutor; however, to be truly effective, i believe a tutor must combine content knowledge with empathy, honesty and humor. In addition I demonstrate a caring attitude. Caring consists of being organized for the tutoring session, being punctual and gaining the students trust.
I studied post secondary in high school and graduated in the top ten of my class. I was on the deans list every year of my college career. I have a great desire to pass the knowledge I was so fortunate to receive from my teachers and mentors, to others so that they may learn how to make better decisions in their own lives. I believe the role of a teacher (tutor) is to motivate students to want to learn. From my own experience I believe students learn the best when they are motivated to learn by seeing the value and importance of the information presented to them. I believe that people learn in different fashions. For example, I feel that some concepts may be better explained with tangible objects while other concepts are learned better when questioned and discussed. By exploring the different ways of learning we can find what works best for that individual and use that method as a tool for their understanding. I feel, in the past, that many of the peers I tutored not only obtained/recollected more information, but were more comfortable in a quiet, relaxed environment.
