Math and Science Tutoring

While obtaining my B.S. I tutored through a community development after school program for a year; in which I helped 4th-8th graders with their math and reading homework. For the past 3 years I have worked as a private math and science tutor helping student from 5th grade up through college level. In the Spring of 2011&2012 I worked as an in-school tutor bringing elementary school students up to grade level in math and reading. My comments on tutoring GED : Math portion only!

Very much based on working with what the student knows. I tend to start by having them explain to me what they are doing and what they think. I then provide some guidance and walk through a sample problem with them. I ask that they try another problem like it on their own and ask questions to prompt them as they work.
I started tutoring in high school for extra credit. I have primarily tutored in mathematics and general chemistry! I tutored a girl in Algebra 1 for a year, helped my best friend and her Mom with college mathematics, and worked through college algebra with my husband. In college I was a teachers assistant for general chemistry 1 and tutored in quantitative chemical analysis. Since then I have tutored a gentlemen for the math portion of his GED. I love watching and learning from children. I believe that learning is closely related to confidence. I like to take the time to get to know children and understand what they like so that I can better understand how their brain works and how they process information. In understanding what they like, this gives me the ability to let them show me something new. The best way that I retained information in college was to teach someone else what I was studying. I started tutoring people because it seemed like a great way to meet different people, but I continued because I like helping people learn and discover new things. Everyone is different and therefore my teaching style various by student but typically the way I relate the information to everyday events or make abstract ideas concrete are the most effective. I work with students in a variety of manners to make sure that auditory, visual, and kinestic learners.
