A Little Bit About Me...

Tutoring has been a somewhat informal yet ever-present aspect of both my collegiate life and professional career. While focusing on pursuing my civil engineering degree at Purdue University, I realized the value that peers with non-engineering degrees saw in my unique gifts with mathematics. Although I never pursued formal teaching certifications, I have worked with several people, both recently and in the past, to realize their full potential to understand both basic as well as advanced level mathematics concepts.

I Make Less Mess and More Message Out of Math

I listen intently to what students ask to decipher their level of understanding. I wish for the students to truely understand and not merely mimic. Math is thinking. Too often I see people who at first are struggling with math treating it as a mimicing subject. Some repetitive practice is needed, but understanding prior to the repetition is better.
I have been teaching since I started college. I taught in the tutoring center at SIUE as a freshman. Since then I have taught a wide variety of classes at Lewis and Clark Community College and St. Louis Community College. I also have had students that I have tutored for many years until they moved off to college. Even then I sometimes was called for tutoring when they were back home. I also have helped with middle and high school math contest teams

As an educator, especially in mathematics, I want my students to not just arrive at the right answer, but understand the process, as well. I want students to have a solid foundation in number theory. I also want them to see the connection between the more elementary levels of mathematics and the more abstact higher levels. I usually spend some time and effort working on the organizational skills of the student, especially if I notice a weakness there. Many times the lack of those organizational skills becomes a detriment to math problem solving. I believe in using whatever means is available to engage the student in the learning process, always keeping in mind the particular learning style, or styles, the student possesses.

I especially enjoy working with students who want to learn, and I truly love math. I know that math concepts are especially difficult for many students to grasp. I feel confident in my approach to assist students in meeting and exceeding their goals. I am a patient, caring person, anxious to make a difference in the lives of my students.
For the past eight years I have worked in a mentor/tutor capacity with focus on mathematics, physics and astronomy. This experience has included college level, high school and middle school students. A Little Bit About Me...

My experience, specifically within the past two years, has been extensive. During this time spent at Webster University I was hired by the Student Literacy Corps, a non-profit organization funded by the university for the purpose of educating students in the St. Louis Public School District in English and writing. In addition to experience in the classroom in developing and implementing lesson plans and developing interpersonal skills with children of many ages, I also studied subjects such as calculus, astrophysics, South African history, and music theory. My experience in school has made me a well-rounded academic, and my experience outside of school has made me a well-rounded educator. I have confidence that I possess the tools necessary to help a child excel in any subject they choose to study.
My goal is to help children in any context that I can. Although I have my sights set ... read more

Since I have been coaching, I knew that I wanted to continue with passing on my knowledge to others. I believe that through teaching the passing of my knowledge can be most rewarding. Although I have worked with students in various fields and of various ages, I get the most satisfaction from watching a student succeed from diligent hard work and personal commitment to learning the task at hand. I feel that tutoring in a one-on-one setting best exemplifies this.
Throughout my college years, I was involved in coaching high school aged students in baseball as well as younger kids in a baseball camp. During my last year of college, I helped with a after school tutoring program that included students up to the sixth grade. All subjects were covered and tutoring was done in one-on-one as well as small group settings. My bachelor's degree is from a self designed major I had developed to b ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I grew and learned a lot as a tutor during my time working at the University of Missouri. Everyone learns a different way and at different paces, so it was important to be patient and easy-going. I believe that everyone has the capacity to learn any subject they desire if they have the proper guidance and motivation. I am confident that I can make a difference in a child's life by providing the guidance and instruction necessary to achieve all their goals.
During my freshman year at the University of Missouri, I showed a great understanding of two upper level calculus courses (Calculus II and Calculus III) and became a part-time math tutor for the university. While completing the requirements for a BS in Civil Engineering, I spent the last 3 years of the program tutoring math students in courses such as Calculus I, II, and a little bit of Calculus III. I also helped many students w ... read more

There are many arrays of learning styles. I personally use visually, writing, and seeing the bigger picture. First, the mind can develop a concept or help map out the ideas by seeing the picture to the learning task. Second writing helps to reinforce the concept or idea. Lastly seeing the bigger picture helps to encompass their own ideas as well as the originator ideas.

Having attended Vanderbilt University for both undergraduate and graduate studies, I have consistently shown that not only do I strive towards excellence in education, but also that I am highly capable of achieving it. I have been able to transfer my knowledge to others using strong interpersonal skills that I obtained through my degrees. I have also mentored/tutored adolescents with both learning and physical disabilities through volunteer work with my local MDA (Muscular Dystrophy Association) chapter and through an internship in psychology as an undergraduate. Primarily I have tutored in math, however I have also prepped students for the GED and have a fairly wide breadth of knowledge for tutoring.

I believe every child has a right to an education and to be educated in an environment that is nurturing and conducive to their individual learning style. As a teacher it is my responsibility to determine what that style is and continuously analyze to ensure that it's working. A teachers responsibility goes further than just delivering content. There is an art to the delivery and the delivery means little if the information is not retained. Through a series of measurement, data collection, and analysis of a students knowledge, this ensures that I am delivery the curriculum in a manner that is conducive to the child's learning.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have worked in both the public and private school settings and have 20 years teaching experience. I enjoy the most the opportunity to work with a child individually because that direct time and attention often makes it easier to assess areas of weakness and how best to adapt instruction to the learner's needs and learning style. One of my most cherished teaching positions was at the Arkansas School for Mathematics and Sciences, a residential high school for gifted junior and seniors. In that environment we were able to do so great learning activities that embedded student performance based learning so that students had opportunities to showcase their learning and language acquisition.

I believe that one of the most important aspects of a successful teaching relationship is understanding both the student's personal learning style and what motivates him or her. I care deeply about the success of the students I work with and am able to adapt my teaching techniques to meet each student's personal needs. I strive to not only give my students greater knowledge, but greater confidence as well. I do that with the hope that our sessions not only help them to develop in our areas of interest, but also help them to become more successful students overall.
