I try to tailor the teaching method to the student.

I have always wanted to teach but enjoyed the research that was available working for a large chemical company. I had the opportunity to teach Organic while I was working and enjoyed it but the time constraints were tough. I am now retired from industry and will be teaching in the Chemistry Department at the University of West Florida. I have one BS in Electrical Engineering, and while an upper-class student tutored younger students. As a senior, I also tutored Intro to EE students on request 2-3 times per week. I currently teach Leadership basics to enlisted Marines during the week. I have a heavy math and science backgrounds based on my major, but also have self-studied psychology, history, and technical writing. While I perfectly respect all of these new theories and methods of both teaching and learning, it must not be forgotten that each student is unique in their style and commitment. I started tutoring math when I attended Faulkner State College. I then attended the University of South Alabama where I tutored math and physics. I have tutored all levels of math and also tutored not only physics, but lab activites as well.
I have always been a quick learner when it comes to mathematics. It is something that comes almost natural to me. With that said, I understand that this is not the case for everyone. I feel that a good majority of people hate math because they don't understand math, and because they don't understand math right away, they don't try to understand it. I had a wise professor once tell me, "Math isn't difficult; there is no such thing as difficult math. It just seems difficult because you haven't learned it yet". I think math can be easy for anyone, they just have to learn it first.

This way no matter what the professor asks they will know how to answer questions and ace exams. If they just memorize things, they can get confused and get answers distorted.
