I have held accounting jobs for over 25 years including doing payroll, sales tax returns and tax returns. I worked for a CPA so I did the accounting for all his clients which gave me experience in different businesses. I attended Southwestern Community College in Sylva, NC however didn't get a degree due to my mother's health.

Depends on the needs of the student. In my first meeting with best friend's daughter, I gave her a sample quiz to fill out to gauge where she was. Then, we began to work through areas where she was having the worst issues. I focused on those and explained things to where she could better understand. I had her do homework then we went over it the next time we met. At the end, I had her take a comprehensive test over areas we had covered that helped to prepare her for the test. I worked with her closely and was pretty much hands on in terms of teaching style.
I don't have much experience in tutoring students. However, in what experience I have, has been limited to college students and my my best friend's youngest daughter. Initially, I found that students would have the "oh my god" look on their face when trying to solve a problem. Many of these students benefitted greatly from my ability to break a complex problem into manageable steps they could follow. In the past, I would ask each student what gave them the most problem about algebra. Based upon their responses, we worked together with a "team approach" to solve a problem.
