A Little Bit About Me...

I prefer to work with small groups of students or individuals as it is easier to meet each student's needs. I am very concise and methodical, but am also sensitive enough to pace myself according to the student's needs. Of course, experience is the best teacher, so I usually review the points that the student has questions on, provide an example of the principles in action, and then help the student work through some problems until he or she understands satisfactorily. As such, I have found that I am very good at teaching math and math-based science as well as languages.
While studying Physics at Iowa State University, I first discovered my love for teaching and tutoring and have been doing it almost continuously since then. I worked for the ISU Academic Success Center helping groups of 1-4 students learn calculus and calculus-based physics for 3 semesters. They always left my ... read more

Every student has different aptitudes and learning issues. Some get distracted easily and there may be others who works hard but get frustrated and anxious often. Patience is the most important attribute that may describe my development as an educator. I may be very creative when exposing simple examples that will help to intensify the student's ability to understand the main math principles before trying to teach any complex information which they wouldn't pick up without a more proper experience and practice in math.
I have knowledge in science and engineering since I studied four years of environmental engineering in Mexico at the "UNIVERSIDAD JUAREZ AUTONOMA DE TABASCO" in Villahermosa Tabasco.I did so much scholar research from books and articles in English when I was attending college. I do not believe in hierarchy. I think the teacher-student or tutor-student relationship should be one of equal footing and mutual discovery. This means asking questions together and seeking out the fundamental answers to questions. I think all children and adults deserve a place to learn about themselves and the world around them where they are free to ask any question and challenge any assumption. This does not mean I am a push over and cannot create structure in a lesson. I just strive to do it in a way that does not discourage creativity and authentic discovery about themselves and the world.

Every student learns differently, but anyone who is open to learning is capable. I enjoy teaching children and teenagers for the spark that they get when something clicks, and they suddenly see the world differently. My experience working with different age levels, from all economic backgrounds, has taught me that all students, no matter their position in life, have something to teach me as well. I am patient and easy-going, but I don't give up.
As a PhD student in sociology at the University of Arizona, I work as a teaching assistant, helping students understand upper division course material in sociology. I also write and grade exams for these courses. I have taken four courses (three at the graduate level) in statistics, so I am also qualified to tutor in this area. I have experience with students of all ages; I taught science at the elementary school level, worked as a Resident ... read more

I am a recent graduate of the University of Arizona with a BA in English and a minor in History. I am passionate about writing and creativity in general. Many years of taking upper level English classes have given me much confidence in my paper writing and editing ability. In addition to all of this, I love to write creatively (especially poetry) in my free time.
I have always felt very comfortable working with children. I previously worked as an after school teacher at a private middle school and ended up having a great relationship with all the kids. I am easy going and patient and feel myself to be someone that can bring the most out of people.

My teaching style devotes about half the time to direct instruction, but I make that a firm upper limit. The student must do the active learning in a classroom, and I foster this by Socratic questioning, discussions, and project work. Tutoring demands an even lower percentage of direct instruction than does classroom teaching, and as a tutor I encourage the student to direct his own session as much as possible.
I gained my BA in History only after years of serious and devoted study, and I bring a respect for whatever subject I teach to the classroom. After gaining my teaching certification with my MS, I taught history and geography in Alabama. After my Latin American Studies MA. I taught Latin, Greek, and Spanish. My tutoring was for middle and high school students in these and other fields, and I am currently a tutor for the University of Arizona's SALT Center, a program whic ... read more

Teaching Style: When the school busses arrived in the morning at Drumlin Farm, I would always welcome the visiting pupils with great enthusiasm. I would determine what the boys and girls already knew, or thought they knew, and what they would like to learn. Then we would go off to have a joyous and educational time learning about, and milking the cows, collecting and scrambling eggs, or planting pumpkin seeds in the warm May soil. I still remember the inner city classroom teacher who remarked on how "Johnny", a boy who tended to cause trouble in the classroom, was now thoroughly engaged in the project, and eagerly helping his buddies.
My Experience: In 1964, I graduated from Columbia College, in Geology. Subsequently, I worked in oil well drilling in Israel, and on a dam project in New Jersey. After earning an MA in Art Education, at Brooklyn College in 1975, I helped found the Wal ... read more

After many years as a Wyoming rancher and three years as an ESL volunteer, I returned to school to become an ESL professional. With my Master of Education degree in hand, I taught a year of ESL classes at Cochise College, then became the Adult ESL Coordinator for Northwest College in Powell, Wyoming. My career path led other directions for several years, then I had the opportunity to return to education as a secondary science teacher in two charter schools. My years as educator have been the most interesting and compelling of my career, and now semi-retired, I'd like to continue part-time.
Every student can learn with motivation. Most of my classes were self-paced, and I had great success in motivating students of all types.
