I believe in teaching to understanding. I try to guide the student through the process in question in ways that facilitate understanding rather than simply copying steps to get an answer. I beleive that the material must be taught in ways that are relevent to the student. Every subject learned has value, if for no other reason, because learning that subject trains your brain to think in a different way. The more ways we can think, the more flexible and adaptable we become and the easier it is to adjust to the demands of education and lif.
I have two years experience teaching high school physics and chemistry plus one semeester student teaching chemistry and algebra in addition to 17 years experience as an automotive engineer. Teaching is very subjective. Each individual learns according to his/her own style. What I find challenging and rewarding is to find that point where it “clicks”. I believe the best way to learn is through experience and discovery. As an example, I can describe the intelligence of an octopus. But until you actually see a video of one opening a jar for a treat, do you truly realize it as a thinking, planning being. I feel that teaching an individual how to use available resources is just as important as the actual subject.
