A Little Bit About Me...

I recently graduated the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a BS in elementary education. I student taught at Morehead Elementary school in kindergarten with Jeanelle Lindsay. During this time I also tutored third graders at Morehead. I have held several tutoring positions in both high school and college, and find great joy in working with children one on one. I have tutored elementary age, and some high school age students in math, science, reading/ english as well as history.
I love working with and teaching children of all ages. I believe that each child is unique and is capable of learning in his or her own unique way. While in college I spent a year working as a writing tutor at my school's university writing center. After graduating cum laude with a degree in communications (and with a minor in English), I taught English as a foreign language for a year and a half in Chad, Africa, as a US Peace Corps volunteer. Following that, I substitute taught for a year at Saints Peter and Paul High School in Easton, Maryland(2006-2007). I teach with the assumption that everyone can learn anything. At the core of my teaching philosophy is the mental model or concept. Consequently, my first goal is to determine if the student has a mental model of the subject matter. If not, I will guide them in discovering a useful one using their existing models and their preferred input mode (tactile, visual, etc.). As seen from above, I have valid tutoring experience in both middle grades and HS. I was in the student teaching program at Wake Forest and upon graduation, I was a substitute teacher in the Winston-Salem, Forsyth County School system. I also participated in the Junior Achievement program in the Piedmont NC region for over 5 years. I am currently a tutor with the "No Child Left Behind Program."
I am a disciplinarian. I have an excellent ability to gain a students attention, keep it and the results of my students have been well above average. I have a knack to bring into the classroom, outside events (latest ball games, Olympics, etc.) to establish a 'bond' between myself and the student. This allows me to gain their confidence as well as not create a bored atmosphere. I find this very important, especially with the more difficult students.
