EXPERT TUTOR-MultiSubject; Home/ONLINE; +WRITING instructor

As a tutor, I find that it is important to present the material to the students in a way that they can relate to. My job as an educator is to teach them how to learn it and make them want to learn it. I personally do not believe that negative reinforcement is beneficial. Positive responses to students are extremely valuable, even if they may occasionally give the wrong answer. This will give them the motivation to do well. My philosophy is that teaching is part knowledge, part communication, and part intuition. My intuition is necessary to understand where a student is getting stuck. I myself already understand the material; the challenge is to understand why a student does not. A variety of communicative teaching approaches is best. I have learned that different students respond to visual, auditory, or tactile methods. As always, continuous practice is extremely important. I also must ... read more

My comments on tutoring Government : Highly qualified k-8

For 20 years I worked for Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools, as a fifth through 7th Grade classroom teacher. I taught all of the academic subjects in various combinations, sometimes all at once to a self-contained class. The State of Tennessee recognized me as "Highly Qualified" in all subjects, from Kindergarten through 8th Grade. I served on the district's math council for 5 years, helped direct the district's science fair one year, and worked extensively in the field of arts-based curriculum development. I also was trained in the IB curriculum, and implemented it for 10 years.
Constructivist, multi-sensory, inquiry-based.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am currently completing my final year at Vanderbilt Law School. Over the past three years, I have taught a class and provided one-on-one tutoring for students preparing to take the LSAT. I also taught an upper level course while in grad school (it was in radio production). While I was in undergrad, I spent time tutoring elementary and middle school aged children over the internet. All together, I have helped dozens of individual students in a private setting and nearly a hundred students in the classroom. Personally, I love numbers and have always been very comfortable with math. But my grades and test scores have always been just as strong in other subjects, and I am confident that I can help you or your child in any of the areas listed below.

By the time that I have spent a short time with my students, they know that I care for them and want them to be the best that they can be; they know that I expect good work from them and want each to do his or her best. As I learn my students, I realize my need to differentiate my teaching styles to fit my students' specific learning needs and am convinced that each person can learn and can do well if he or she is worked with according to his or her particular learning style. I am patient with my students but work to push them to be their best.

I love to work hands- on with children. I believe in meeting a child at their individual level, both emotionally and academically. I want to make my students believe in themselves in order that they one day meet their full potential.
After finishing my undergraduate work, I was a substitute teacher for 7 months. I then went on to Belmont University where I recieved my Masters in Education, which required a one year student teaching placement. I have also served as a TCAP interventionalist where I helped students prepare for the statewide achievment test.

More About This Tutor...

Growing up with more than five teachers in my family, I have always had a deep understanding of the importance of education and a drive to teach others. I recieved my Bachelor's in English from the University of Southern Indiana with the intention of completing a Masters and becomming an instructor at the college level. However, upon completion of my Bachelors, I immediately began teaching at Nashville State Community College as an adjunct english instructor. I then made a transition to tutoring grades K-12 for the No Child Left Behind Program. I have enjoyed working in this capacity for the program ever since I started tutoring five years ago.
The greatest benefit of teaching, to me, is seeing the look in a child's eyes when he or she finally reaches that understanding of what you are teaching them. The challenge of finding a new way to help a child reach this understanding i ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching should be an engaging process between both the teacher and student. When students are not only able to comprehend concepts, but to fully explain the concepts to others, true learning has occurred. My goal is to strive for true understanding and to ignite a passion for knowledge that will fuel the learners for years to come. I believe that all students can learn and education holds the key for future success in life. I facilitate the learning process through the use of differentiated instruction and Gardner’s multiple intelligences theory. I believe in the constructivist model of education and knowledge seeking which focuses on a facilitation of the learning process and allows students to construct their own learning.

A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching has been a productive and varied part of my life. I've worked as a substitute for nearly 18 years(1974-1992) in the Champaign-Urbana area school districts in Illinois, as well as a private music instructor, and as a class guitar instructor before moving to Nashville in 1996. I've done in home tutoring for students that were homebound for various reasons. I have great communications skills either working one on one or, in a class environment and have developed extensive grammatical skills through the writing of various research papers as a part of both my musical and educational college backgrounds.
I have a deep passion to share my knowledge with people(all ages). I've developed my teaching style to be proactive towards a students needs, goals and commitment. I treat all my students with respect, patience and consideration, with the idea being to help each one work toward ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I love to work with children because it allows me to use my creativity. I tend to use a more kinesethic, hands-on approach in my teaching. I believe that when children are able to have the subject matter displayed to them in a 3D format, they are able to comprehend it's use in the real world. It also keeps their attention span active. For example, once when working on fractions with a student I brought in playdoh that we shaped into a pie. The child was able to create the fractions with their hands and was excited about taking pieces away and counting what was left in the pie. For me, the experience of seeing a child's eyes light up when they are finally able to comprehend something is very rewarding.
I have always had a passion for educating children. I attended two different colleges and I value the experience and skills provided by both institutions. I spent two years at the U ... read more

More About This Tutor...

Family & friends have expressed to me that my open-mindedness & clever & creative nature allow me to have an almost sixth sense-like intuition. Through the NCLB program, I put this theory to the test, & to be perfectly honest, I feel as if I lived up to this supposed “inherent capacity” to touch & better the lives of underprivileged, neglected, inner-city youth. As an educational activist, I REALLY, REALLY try to get & know each child on an individual basis. I want the child to become comfortable with me in their immediate environment: if a child cannot trust, respect, & admire his or her educator as a mentor, how can we truly expect the child to take his or her education seriously? Can we expect a progressive future if our children’s latent potential is never tapped into, & only remains dormant? I’m here to make that possibility less likely.

I believe that the most important characteristic that a teacher must have is consistency. The teacher must develop a system of rigorous work with ample support. I believe that it is imperative to possess an in-depth knowledge of the subject which one teaches, not just be a few pages ahead in the book. In order to achieve this high level, I prepare meticulously for each session, reach the student on his or her level and help guide them to where he or she needs to be.
I have had the opportunity to work and help develop young minds for a few years. After college, I tutored full time at a high performing urban charter school where I worked on basic remedial skills with students. I have continued to work with young people to build confidence in their skills and improve their performance in school and on tests. I have tutored students from 5th grade through 12th grade, focusing mostly on ... read more
