I majored in English and Russian and work with several communities for whom English is not their first language. As an undergraduate at NYU, I earned that extra spending money by tutoring Latin. As my customer base grew, I branched out into mathematics and general study skills. After college I went to Europe to earn an MA in Linguistics. Upon return, I immediately began a PhD program, and I used my previous experience in a number of side jobs teaching English as a second language. A Little Bit About Me...

I have just earned my doctorate in Italian from Columbia University. I feel strongly my teaching of college Italian at Pace University is helping to open doors for my students, not only in terms of encountering Italian culture but also in terms of improving their English grammar and vocabulary. Outside the college classroom, I have been tutoring students in Italian, and I have helped students with application essays, as well. My tutorees have been admitted to graduate programs at Harvard, Columbia, Berkeley and Hopkins.
My teaching philosophy is that learning is most effective when it is also enjoyable. I bring in diverse art forms -- painting, music, architecture and film -- as mnemonics in illustrating points of grammar. The College Board examinations, which serve as an educational tool for the admission of students into colleges, still features one Latin examination on a voluntary basis: Advanced Placement Latin: Vergil. Latin and its daughter Romance languages are the only surviving branch of the Italic language family. Other branches, known as Italic languages, are attested in documents surviving from early Italy, but were assimilated during the Roman Republic.
