As an editor working with young writers and as a college professor teaching students, I have spent most of my adult life passing on writing, communication and reading comprehension skills to young people. I enjoy it. I enjoy it because it matters. Writing is a lifelong skill. The ability to comprehend information and communicate clearly can make the difference in passing a class, getting into college or getting a job. My skills in writing and editing come from hundreds of published stories and dozens of successful academic papers. My work in assisting students with applications of many kinds has been largely successful. I’ve read dozens of classic novels and can provide excellent guidance in many aspects of reading comprehension.
I realize that learning reading and writing skills can be difficult. When I teach young people, I work to push each person patiently but constantly ... read more

I believe teaching is best learned though practical examples (especially math). because I used to say the same thing that I'm sure that kids today are saying. When am i ever going to use this in my daily life? Its important to let them see the applications from knowing calculus based formulas to predict market declines (algorithms), to basic math in in inventory work, to understanding complex words and their proper sentence usage so they can understand what rudimentary or neophyte means in a job interview. Also, its important to inspire. most of the children/ teens in a tutoring course have been discouraged due to the fact that they are not picking up on a subject as quickly as their peers. That why its understandable that if they have someone to look up to, as i did, in a particular course they tend to do better and go beyond what they though originally possible.

My entire background revolves around teaching. I taught in a Preschool while I was working on my Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. While there I worked with all ages from Infants to the School Age children. After completing my degree I then went to teach in a public school. The first year I taught and ran the Preschool Program of about 50 children, ages 3 to 5 years. The next four years I taught third grade where our emphasis was on reading comprehension, analytical thinking skills, and writing. After leaving the public school arena I completed my MBA and then moved on to teaching adults. Lately I have been working at a local hospital instructing Physicians, Nurses, Pharmacists, and Clinic Managers on integrating their new Electronic Health Records program.
My teaching style depends on the person I am working with and the subject matter we are exploring. Everyone le ... read more

My first responsibility is the empowerment of my students. I always want my students to have a concrete sense of motivation and what their goals are, even if it's just getting a passing grade. Next, I want my students to believe that they are capable of reaching their goals. If they are capable of performing under one set of circumstances, it's possible to perform under any set of circumstances, especially tests. After that, we get down to the brass tacks of learning: How the student learns best, what strategies we can use, and how much building or remodeling we have to do.
I graduated summa cum laude in the Honors College at Missouri State with a degree in cell and molecular biology and extensive studies in math and physics. I have been working as a private tutor in math and science for 10 years, working with students in upper elementary through college. I have been a certifie ... read more

I have had several years experience of teaching throughout my schooling from college education, personal experience-being the oldest child/grandchild, daily experiences, and now being a parent of a young child. I've always known I would be a teacher. I loved my teachers growing up & I had a natural curiosity to know what it was like to help others. I hold 3 degrees-AA in Elementary Education, BS in Early Childhood Education, and MA-in Education. Even though I do have my degrees, I feel grateful to learn everyday. I feel that daily experiences make us smarter. I know that learning something new everyday makes me proud of myself and others, and very thankful that I have the opportunity to learn new things.
I believe children can learn in their own personal ways. I work with them to find their strengths/things they love, to help learning be more fun & productive. I teach t ... read more
