Experienced tutor and current student in teaching school

I have been working as a student worker at Blue River Community College for the past few years. I really enjoy being able to help students study and learn. I graduated with my Associates this year and am pursuing a teaching degree. I have also had experience with helping tutor the children of freinds and family. I am able to and have exerience working with ages from elementary school students all the way up to college students.
I like to help students find out how they learn best by asking questions and through learning style tests. Everyone doesn't learn in the same way and by finding out the students learning style I like to then taylor how I help them learn based off how they will be able to retain the information best.

I have been teaching in the elementary and middle school classrooms for 13 years. I have worked as an after school tutor during many school years with 5-12 graders. In addition to the tutoring, I also directed an after school gifted and talented program where students engineered, designed, and created new inventions. I was a counselor at Camp Invention during the year 2011 which was another opportunity to engage students in learning outside of the classroom. I have been the director of Spring Break school in urban Kansas City which was an intensive tutoring program for students.

Educating the youth-academically, socially, and mentally.

I am a second year teacher. I taught 4th grade last year, and will be teaching 5th grade this school year. I am certified in both Missouri and Kansas. I obtained my degree from UMKC. I am very passionate about what I do and take it very seriously. However, learning should be flexible with lots of hands on experiences.
Student needs to first be extrinsically motivated with a goal of intrinsic motivation. Motivation is key in learning.

"Every child can learn."

My passion is education and I have more than thirty successful years of teaching students with diverse learning abilities and learning styles. As an educator, I am most rewarded when I can witness with the student that "Ah,ha" moment when they understand a concept or have mastered a problem solving activity.

My comments on tutoring Reading : I have experience working with elementary age children in learning to read using phonics and sight reading. Children are not being taught basic phonics and, therefore, are struggling with reading basic words. I use a phonics curriculum called, "Phonics Pathways". I will analyze your child's knowledge of basic phonics and decide where to start.

I prefer a hybrid teaching style. If a standard teaching style was working for the student then they most likely would not need tutoring.
I have taught Early Childhood Education since 2000 to 2002 at Angel Academy Preschool. Later, I worked with children through the Y.M.C.A of Port Huron, Michigan and Lenawee County, Michigan. I helped school age children with homework in the afternoons and during the day taught preschool. While attending junior College I tutored students struggling with math. After graduating college I began substitute teaching in Michigan for elementary school children. I became a mother in 2011 and stayed home with my children for a few years, and then went back to substituting. In 2016, I earned my certification in Missouri and have worked with preschool age and elementary age children for the past 4.5 years.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have always loved teaching and working with students. My mother is a teacher of almost 30 years, so I have the importance of education ingrained in me. I do believe that every student can learn, some are just a little harder to reach than others. I am trained in a variety of teaching techniques and pride myself on being able to work through the strategies with students to find one that will work. I do believe that there must be a mutual level of respect between teacher and student and so I do work hard to learn about my students' backgrounds and interests to help with my lessons. I am very easy to talk to and get along with as well.
While in high school I completed two years in a practicum that put me in a classroom working one on one with students my junior and senior years. I completed my undergraduate degree in Middle School Education with an emphasis in Language Arts. I ... read more

The most important thing to remember when teaching a child new concepts is patience. All children learn skills in different ways. Some catch on quickly, others need more time. Even the way in which you demonstrate how a problem is solved can make a difference. I usually try several methods for solving problems rather than insist that they learn the traditional methods only. The little bit of extra time spent giving them the optional techniques could make a world of difference in their educational success.
As a parent of two school-aged children I have had the oppurtunity to learn about the newest teaching methods employed by teachers at this time. We often work together on math and science. I am currently working on my teaching certification in middle school science, but have always been had excelent aptitude for mathmatics. I also substitute in the Blue Springs, Grain Valley and F ... read more

During my Junior and Senior year of college, I tutored at a Children's Home in Lubbock, TX, 3 nights a week. I have also taught Sunday School classes off and on for the past 15 years for ages 1 year to 14 years old. Spanish and teaching have always been passions of mine that I have been fortunate enough to make a career out of doing and using both. I have a bachelor's degree (BA) in Spanish with a teaching certificate and I am currently working on my Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction. I have taught for six years in the Northern Virginia area, Washington D.C. and in Independence, Missouri. I have also tutored students in Spanish of all levels, taught Spanish 1 and 2, as well as English as a Second Language.
Students have described me as a very caring and kind educator. I take the time to explain how and why things are different in foreign languages. In the beginning of the year (or when I get a new student), I take the time out to give the student a quiz that helps determine what learning style they are based off of seven different learning styles. This helps the students learn not o ... read more
