A Little Bit About Me...

I am a firm believer that if a student really wants to learn, and accepts a challenge, they can learn a language faster in a few months than most people can over the course of an entire school career. I don't believe in traditional styles that simply teach words and phrases, but rather I focus on the core of grammar. While perfecting my Spanish skills I began to develop a course to teach Spanish to beginners, and continue to perfect that course with a hope to someday publish. With the majority of my experience tutoring advanced level sophmores, juniors, and seniors in college, I am confident that I am ready for all levels of Spanish.

I am working on my Master's Degree at The College of Saint Scholastica, in Education. I also have had numerous classroom field experiences through the college, where I have been observed by other teachers and professors. I love working with all ages and generally prefer English as a Second Language students, but I enjoy working with everyone. My teaching style is very student centered as I try to figure out what a learner likes to learn and cater the instruction to them so it stays fun and educational. I do not necessarily prescribe to a particular approach to teaching as I believe it takes a variety to make a difference. Every learner is different. At SCSU, I work as a writing consultant at the Writing Center on campus. With students, I help to make them better writers by helping answer questions, presenting questions, working through the brainstorming and paper-writing process, and helping with formatting. As well, I have helped to coordinate our second satellite location, which entails working with people on their schedules, managing conflicts of schedule, and serving as a head of the second location. I've been told I have a great capacity for making complex ideas more understandable. This is why students seeking Math help at my University would ask for me specifically, I can take a complicated concept and explain it in a way that makes it seem much simpler, and when one approach doesn't work, I go again from a different direction. My goal is always to make the student understand the process and reasoning, not just memorize a method. I am approachable and patient, and I can adapt to any learning style.
