My comments on tutoring Italian : -->courses at Boston University -->extensive travel in Italy

(Can provide résumé) Experience teaching academic English to speakers of other languages, most specifically those native to Mandarin Chinese. My background is in French language, linguistics, culture and literature and therein leads to my profession goals of having a classroom. I have tutored students in FRenhc, Italian, English and sociolinguistics (e.g. how extrahuman factors [sex, age, region, etc.] influence our speech).

My tutoring career began as an honors research student in college. I shared my skills and passion for French and history in plain and easy to grasp concepts that even helped "non-language" types to succeed. Furthering my foundation in teaching methods I pursued my Master's degree in teaching a second language while serving as a graduate. I accepted a fellowship to teach middle school and high school on the French speaking island of Guadeloupe in the Caribbean for one year where I taught English conversation and American Culture. After returning to the United States, I taught high school Italian and am currently teaching 7th grade French.
I believe that a solid and rounded education is the foundation for any society and that education begins with an individual. This belief drives my number objective: to teach to the student. For me, it means recognizing the unique abilities and pers ... read more

The University of Delaware has integrated me into the education field with a variety of experiences. I will earn my degree in May of 2011, becoming certified in Elementary Teacher Education and Middle School Social Studies. Over the past few years, I have strengthened in my ability to work with students of diverse needs and present effective instruction for the particular learner. This increases the student's motivation and desire to learn. From the opportunity to study abroad in Spain and Italy, I was exposed to different cultures broadening my understanding of human nature. Part of my course work has included developing unit plans, lesson portfolios, assessments and materials for students.
As an educator, my understanding and approach to learning comes from placing myself in the perspective of the student. Therefore, student's opinion on coursework needs to be heard in order to c ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy helping people learn something new. I think anyone can do anything they put their mind to. I would allow the student time to get to know me so they would feel comfortable with me. Students sometimes feel too vulnerable to try things when they don't know someone because they do not want to make mistakes. I would let them know that the only way to get better at something is to make mistakes so they can learn from those mistakes by making the appropriate corrections. Confidence is key. Positive work ethics allow me to help and give students the confidence necessary to complete anything put before them.
Graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in Journalism has given me the easygoing background to educate others in writing and reading. I am always the person asked by friends and family when they are not sure how to spell a word or if they need something to be proofread. I enjoy read ... read more

I have always been a lifelong learner, and I see tutoring as an extension of my desire to consistently review and engage with all academic material. The liberal arts education that I received at Scripps College set the standard to appreciate and learn a variety of subjects. I received two bachelor degrees, BA in Art History and BA in French, but also spent considerable time taking math and science courses. My writing skills also significantly developed during this time, and particularly came to full fruition during my graduate work in Art History. For both my BA and MA degrees, I had to produce unique, independently researched theses that were at least 12,000 words in length. Since then, I have delved into the sciences at the University of Pennsylvania, where I completed all necessary pre-medical coursework. I have also been working with special needs children in Philadelphia public ... read more

I like to use a lot of visual supports, use scenarios or puppet shows (for young children) to have interaction in the language. As a native speaker I easily improvise when the student(s) show a specific interest. The culture is also very important to have a better grasp of the language. I always try to show students cultural aspects or differences while teaching.
I was a substitute teacher for Elkton High School, during the year 2006 and 2007. I taught French I - IV and other courses as required. I taught Italian and French at two community colleges from 2004 to 2006. I have also tutored French and other subjects since 1998 in France and the United States.
