Because of my elementary background, it is safe to say I am a very patient person and I use that skill in my ability. I allow the children to create their own paths and when there are roadblocks we work together to find a solution. I am not in the habit of giving students the answers. I feel education is most effective when self discovery is involved and I want my students to feel that they are learning and achieving in every way possible. All students are capable of success; some just need more guidance than others. My teaching experience has been primarily focused on elementary education, however I have tutored freshman in English and History. I have a degree in psychology from St. Ambrose in Davenport and finished my licensure at Ottawa University in Phoenix. I am certified to teach K-6 in Arizona and I have applied for Iowa certification.

I attended Sarah Lawrence College, where I studied English and Spanish literature, Ancient Greek, history and philosophy. I graduated with an MFA in English from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop in May of 2008, and I am currently the Provost’s Post-Graduate Writing Fellow in fiction at the University of Iowa. I have three years of experience teaching college students in English and creative writing. I have also occasionally tutored students at the University of Iowa in Ancient Greek.

I am very good at one on one interaction with students of all ages. During the last five years, I have tutored students in Latin, advanced high school Mathematics, high school Chemistry, and English. In addition to my tutoring experience, I taught Latin language and American History for one year in the parochial Terre Haute, IN school district. I tutor in a problem-solving manner. I assess weak areas and focus on improving cognition and reproduction in these areas. I help the child develop study skills that are important to success, such as routine formation and usage of flash cards and other study aids.
