A Little Bit About Me...

Prior to homeschooling my six children, I worked as a Research Assistant at the Schriner's Burn Institute in Boston, and then at Darmouth College Medical School in Hanover, NH. My science and laboratory background from UVM was beneficial to my success in these labs. I have now spent to past 18 years homeschooling my children. The three oldest have graduated high school with complete NY state requirements. They have all tested in the 700's in Verbal SAT and high 600's for Math. I have been a teacher for over six years. I have taught and/or tutored subjects ranging from elementary reading and math to high school math and science. In a world of specialization, I tend to break the mold by having rather wide academic interests. I earned a bachelors degree in Religion, then went on to earn an MA in Theology. In between this period I did a semester of Analytic Philosophy while attending Talbot School of Theology in La Mirada CA. The nature of my studies has forced me to focus on worldview. All children are students; they can learn. The question is how best do they learn? I have used many differing styles from rote memorization through self-paced self-education. I encourage students to see the wonder and "mystery" (there really isn't any mystery) of Math, regardless of the level, in the real world. To that aid, I try to present real world problems at levels the student can understand. For lower level students, I investigate with them the development of the linear equations involved in setting up a relationship between two factors. A higher level student would solve multiple linear equations. A height vs. time linear relationship then can become quadratic, thus involving sports as an application.
