I think it is more important to understand the student than to understand the material. Don't get me wrong - as a teacher I always re-educate myself to the material if need be - but I feel my real strength as an educator lies in finding a new way to teach the same concept. If a student is failing to learn, it is less often the material itself and more often the way it is being presented. I enjoy teaching children of all ages. I believe that a good teacher is one that can reach any child regardless of how that specific student learns best. One thing that I have found that works best is finding out the many interests of a student and then using those interests to engage the child. Once a child is engaged in the material, teaching is the easy part. I believe modeling is one of the key aspects in order for a child to be successful. Luckily, I got into a great university and found out, after taking a few core classes, that I actually love science. I obtained a B.S. in engineering from Webb Institute in 1968, entered the U.S. Coast Guard and thereafter obtained a JD in Law from SUNY, Buffalo. I tutored underclassmen in calculus while at Webb and taught seventh and eighth grade math and science in a small catholic school, part time, while in law school. Following law school I was a prosecutor for six years after which I became a hearing officer for NYS OCFS. I retired from state service about one year ago, at age sixty-two.
