I feel capable and confident teaching children of any age and aptitude. I am a firm believer in setting up a solid foundation of competence in a subject before moving on. I pride myself on being able to quickly and accurately assess the present faculty of students and work to reinforce the foundation of that aptitude before moving on to more advanced concepts. Once a firm foundation is established, moving forward becomes a simple matter because all contingent concepts are thoroughly understood and the confidence of the student is established. I have had success with this method because it provides the student with a very real and tangible sense of confidence on which to proceed forward.

I believe teaching is best learned though practical examples (especially math). because I used to say the same thing that I'm sure that kids today are saying. When am i ever going to use this in my daily life? Its important to let them see the applications from knowing calculus based formulas to predict market declines (algorithms), to basic math in in inventory work, to understanding complex words and their proper sentence usage so they can understand what rudimentary or neophyte means in a job interview. Also, its important to inspire. most of the children/ teens in a tutoring course have been discouraged due to the fact that they are not picking up on a subject as quickly as their peers. That why its understandable that if they have someone to look up to, as i did, in a particular course they tend to do better and go beyond what they though originally possible.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have children who are twenty one, seven, six, four, and two, as well as a granddaughter who is three. No two have learned in precisely the same way, and I have had to use multiple approaches to help them learn. I have also coached teams in five sports. I have spent a lifetime teaching kids to do things they never dreamed they could attain. I know that kids can learn anything they wish, and can become anything they wish.
I am a world class scholar, with roughly 1600 different publishing credits in nineteen distinct academic fields. I have taught more than 130 sections of twenty two different courses in seven different academic disciplines at five different colleges and universities. I have graduate degrees from Harvard and Johns Hopkins. I read seventeen languages.

A Little Bit About Me...

As an editor working with young writers and as a college professor teaching students, I have spent most of my adult life passing on writing, communication and reading comprehension skills to young people. I enjoy it. I enjoy it because it matters. Writing is a lifelong skill. The ability to comprehend information and communicate clearly can make the difference in passing a class, getting into college or getting a job. My skills in writing and editing come from hundreds of published stories and dozens of successful academic papers. My work in assisting students with applications of many kinds has been largely successful. I’ve read dozens of classic novels and can provide excellent guidance in many aspects of reading comprehension.
I realize that learning reading and writing skills can be difficult. When I teach young people, I work to push each person patiently but constantly ... read more
