I would have to say that my teaching style is flexibility. I believe that it is necessary to gauge your students as a group and individually before deciding on which teaching methods would be most effective. I believe that naturalistic teaching is important. I also believe in a form of discrete trial training. It takes some of the basics from Discrete Trial and adapts them to fit the needs of the students that are struggling with certain subjects. Research has proven that all students learn differently and lessons cannot be taught primarily through auditory learning. A teacher especially one in the younger grades must engage in auditory, visual, tactile, kinestics and other learning methods.

I specialized in poetry studying under one of the top T.S. Eliot scholars. As a literature major we studied a wide range of topics from early english to post colonial literature. This has given me a great appreciation of the english language. Having grown up abroad in Amsterdam and Switzerland has also made me enthusiastic about the barrier between conversational and written language.

A Little Bit About Me...

My years of studying and tutoring have given me the patience and kindness to work with both my peers, mentors, and children. I have a free-flowing personality and I am not easily shaken. I look for challenges in my every day life and welcome new ideas and criticisms so that I can not only improve myself, but those around me. I do not believe that "some people can not learn," but I do believe that with proper, constructive methods of learning, all can learn and will grow to love learning. I wish for this to continue in all people for the rest of their lives.

I am patient and approachable but insist on the value of completing assignments even if the student "hates" them. I am good at explaining how this will be important later, which turns around reluctant learners. I believe in explaining, showing, modelling, and then stepping back while the student tries, explains, and determines where the mistakes come up. I value resiliance, and bask in the joy of competence achieved through effort.
I went from the Boston Public Schools to Commonwealth School and then Wellesley College, and would have been lost, early on, without help from tutors. I majored in English and Russian and work with several communities for whom English is not their first language. (Re: one-on-one tutoring)--My teaching style is adapted to the learning style, level, and age of an individual student and is attuned to the sensitivities and personalities of those with whom I interact. First I identify the challenges of the subject to be taught and the ability and knowledge the student has already acquired. I choose the best resources to use and the best method of communicating about the subject with the student. If it's English, I'd work with them to practice using tools for reading comprehension (highlighting key passages, summarizing key concepts, predicting plot developments, relating their experiences to those of characters, etc.) and for writing (outlining, structuring material, etc.). In general, I create an enjoyable dynamic learning environment and use the benefits of rapport to accelerate the achievement of goals. I like to engage students' curiosity, i ... read more

My teaching style is relaxed, but focused. I believe all children can be natural learners, especially when they find something that interests them. Patience is the key with children. Every child has their own pace and learning style. Some are very visual learners while others need to be able to be more hands-on. It is very rewarding helping someone succeed.

I view teaching as successful transference of knowledge. I have a profound respect for teachers that teach for the love of it. After I completed my Bachelors degree, I taught for 2 weeks at a High School in Barbados that catered to students with special education needs. Though it was a short period of time, I enjoyed developing different techniques to engage the unique needs of each child. I prefer interactive methods of teaching as I believe that children learn more when they feel a part of the learning process. The students that I taught appreciated my caring and patient approach. Patience is key when tutoring because pressure only inhibits learning potential. I receive great joy from the expression on a child’s face when they have finally understood a concept. Then and only then do I smile with great pride of having been able to accomplish successful transference of knowledge. ... read more
