Experienced math tutor.

It depends on the student and what they are doing. If all they need is practice, then I will let the student do all of the work, interjecting only to give advice or to correct a mistake if the student does not catch it themselves. If needed, I will work out similar problems. If the student needs help understanding, I first go in depth why it works and why you do what you do. I then give concrete examples to demonstrate it so that the why makes sense and comes together with the actual application. Then I have the student practice to make sure they truly understand. If needed, I will become creative and come up with different ways of looking at problems so that they can make sense. But no matter what I try to have fun. The best way to learn is to have fun, and if you aren't enjoying yourself you probably won't be receptive to learning.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have a direct and simple teaching method. I love teaching physics and it always came naturally to me but I understand that most people do not feel the same way. I try to help students gain a deep understanding of the subject matter so that the principles and concepts are learnt and not simple formula memorizing. I do this so that when the student comes across a problem that does not fit the general shape of previous problems they can use the concepts learned to solve the problem. In short I try to teach problem solving and not rote learning in my subjects.

I am by nature an encourager. I am optimistic every child can learn -- the trick is to spark an interest in the subject and communicate the material to them in an understandable way. Learning at its best should be fun and educational, though not necessarily entertaining. Having said that, there are no shortcuts for hardwork and homework and repetitions on problem solving.
I have left the corporate after 18 years to pursue teaching. I have two bachelors degrees in physics & mech. engineering. I want to put these to use and make an impact on kids in my community. I enjoy teaching; it is my best talent. I understand that math is not a "favorite subject" to a lot of students. Working one on one in a tutoring situation gets past the negative block students have in a math classroom. Several of my private students have worked with me for several years. Their parents said that they felt more confident in the class room and in testing situations because of their work with me. In addition to tutoring in traditional school math subjects, I have also worked with several students on PSAT and SAT preparation. All of these students achieved a higher score on these tests after working with me one on one.

A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated Phi Beta Kappa, Magna Cum Laude with honors in Mathematics from Brandeis University. I proceeded to graduate school, where I studied math and taught calculus for two years. Not wanting to spend my career doing research, I went into the business world, first getting an MBA from Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Sloan School of Business. I’ve always wanted to go back to teaching. I've taught at Alamance Community College, and have for the past year been an adjunct professor of Mathematics and Statistics at Elon University.

I enjoy working with children of all ages, backgrounds, and learning abilities. As a recent college graduate, I am a great communicator in addition to being able to relate to being put in the student situation. Everyone perceives the world through the five senses. However, different people rely on each of the senses to varying degrees. The information that I present to the student is structured in a way in which one can absorb it well. The first issue that I address is if the student is engaged in the lesson that is being reinforced. I also, ensure that the style of teaching being delivered is appropriate for that student to achieve lesson objectives. To ensure comprehension, I stop regularly to check student engagement. I believe recalling information is a prerequisite for developing higher order thinking skills. I make an effort to ensure the lesson and understand each one of my studen ... read more

I have a great passion for acquiring knowledge, and I pursue it anywhere I find myself. I have, through hard work, earned two degrees, a bachelor’s and a master’s. I have gained tremendous knowledge and skills in math and the sciences. I have tutored students in English, math, science and geography.
I am a living testimony for the case that all children can learn. I also believe that a special educator can make all the difference as one did with me years ago. I provide the necessary passion combined with dedication, consideration and commitment. My philosophy has always been that there is no one way of finding solutions; approach a student from every angle until the right teaching style has been identified.

While working on my undergrad I was given the opportunity to be a teaching assistant for a freshman college level film theory and design class. During this opportunity I was responsible for grading the daily work of our students, as well as being a resource for the students design projects. I taught lectures based on film theory and design, as well as specific pieces of film.
I myself am a visual and auditory learner, so I am very open to all types of teaching styles. I find that people learn better when several avenues of learning are available for a subject. Also repetition is a very important device for making knowledge permanent. I like to bring a fun and light atmosphere to learning.

I enjoy tutoring and working with students. I feel that I am a friendly, patient, and calm tutor. I put students at ease, help them to feel comfortable, and let them know they can ask questions. I can explain things in an informal, easy-to-understand manner, which is especially helpful for students who have trouble in school. My flexible teaching style helps me adapt and customize tutoring sessions to each individual student because learning is not one size fits all. I like to find things that the student understands and/or can relate to in order to explain and explore difficult concepts and topics.
In addition to tutoring during high school, I have worked at an independent local tutoring company and at the local Huntington Learning Center since I've graduated college.
