My teaching style is more of a hands-on technique. I use songs, sensory play, body movement and silly games to assist with learning. I create my lessons directly towards each students strengths and areas of struggle. For example, I once had jelly-beans in the bottom of a bowl of jello. The purpose of this is for the students to retrieve the jelly-beans and sort the beans by color, while having a glove on one hand for sensory play. The students loved this activity!
I am currently a teacher on the Navajo Nation in St. Michaels, Arizona. I teach three classroom at St. Michaels Association for Special Education with students ranging from severe autism to tracheas, g-tubes, daily seizures, etc. I currently teach Primary Medically Fragile and Primary Autistic support, which is kids ages 5 to 9 years old. My freshman class at BYU had over 400 Chemical Engineering students. Sixteen of us graduated, the rest were 'weeded out'. I am just one class short of a BS in Chemistry, and but one class short of a minor in Physics and Norwegian. Electrical Engineering very much mentored my abilities in math, and I did get a minor in math from Utah State University. I have tutored a number of students in math, chemistry and physics, as well as a few in English literature and grammar.
I love teaching, and find helping others learn and understand very rewarding. My experience has taught me that many, if not most, learning problems are reflective of the teachers incomplete understanding of the subject they are trying to teach. Teaching RTI Math, Algebra and Geometry to “At Risk Students” in high school was really a great challenge to me. I used to teach these kids “One –on –One” inside the classroom everyday to cultivate their minds to reach their potentials. I used a positive friendly approach to motivate them to learn. I gave example in a real life situation for them to understand not just the mathematical operation but also the purpose of the lessons for their life today and in the future. The challenge made me believed that students can learn but in many different ways individually and in many different approaches by the teacher. I believed that education starts at home and should be added and refined by the teachings inside the classrooms in the schools.
