When working with children, I try my best to be engaging, interactive, and fun. If necessary, I'll use props (e.g. building blocks) to help illustrate concepts, and I always try to ask many questions along the way to make sure my explanations are clear. With older students I will use a slightly more textbook approach, but keeping lessons interactive still remains essential, and props may still be useful in some circumstances. In both situations, I try to find which learning styles work best for the student and present lessons based on those. Each person has a unique way of learning, and if a teacher takes the time to understand it, then the student's true potential can be reached.

During High School I taught at a science camp for 3 years. After college I went and lived in China and taught university level ESL for 3 years. I have worked for a few local tutoring organizations in the last 2 years as well as doing private tutoring. I have worked with ages 8-24 for tutoring and teaching and I have taught/tutored English, Math, Science, and history up through the 8th grade level.
I think that it is important to make sure that the student understands the concepts being learned in each subject rather than learning how to do one particular problem. In 2009, I was a professional tutor(as opposed to a peer-tutor) for the Biology Department of Ulster County Community College, NY, for students struggling with: Bio 100 for non-science majors, Bio 101—an intro course for those planning to continue but lacking a strong background, Bio 105—General Bio required by all biology-related programs, and Bio 109—Human Bio for non-science majors. I noted that if students needed Biology assistance, they often needed Chemistry assistance also, so the basics of that had to be included in order for topics like macromolecules and cellular respiration to make any true sense at all.
