Hidden Talents Tutoring

My tutoring style focuses on understanding concepts, not simply getting the right answers. This emphasis improves retention and helps students apply their knowledge to new problems. I teach a variety of memorization techniques, but if the student understands a process or formula, memorization is often unnecessary. Whenever possible, I use hands-on exercises, manipulatives, and exploration to help students visualize abstract concepts and discover principles for themselves. Rather than giving answers easily, I ask questions to lead the student in solving problems. I am patient and have a talent for explaining technical information to non-technical people. Because I have had the opportunity to work with students of many different ages and abilities, I have learned that there is no "right" way to teach/tutor. As a tutor I have had to adjust my teaching style depending on the type of student I am working with. What works for one student may not necessarily work with another. For example, if a student has a lackadaisical attitude, I will do what I can to try to motivate him/her. Other students may be very motivated, but may need help with focusing, organizing or other key skill. With all students, I try to be as patient as possible and as clear as I possibly can when I am explaining material.
