During my three years of formal tutoring, I was able to change my tutoring styles to fit the needs of the student. Everyone learns differently and it is important to realize and adjust my tutoring accordingly. During the last three years of my undergraduate college career, I was a Mathematics tutor for student athletes. Although the courses covered while tutoring ranged from basic math to calculus, I am more comfotable tutoring algebra and geometry. I earned my BA with a double major in Mathematics and Russian in just four years. After college, I helped my sister and step-sister with their math and math-related physcis problems.

My experience in tutoring began in high school when I volunteered for my local library, in a program aimed towards improving students’ reading ability. Having had considerable difficulty learning to read myself, I felt it was important that I attempt to pass this on to others. When I entered Knox College I was focusing on English, and ended up helping my fellow students with writing and editing their papers. I have always sought to lead rather than force something upon the student by rote. Most important is to present the information in a way that is both interesting and memorable. It is my experience that people remember things better when they truly understand the process, and have reason to listen to the explanation.

When I worked for Junior Achievement of Greater Birmingham from the Summer of 2005 until the Summer of 2006, I was also exposed to teaching economics in elementary schools. I truly enjoyed this and loved how these young children improved their understanding of basic economic concepts due to my teaching abilities. I moved to Colorado and entered graduate school supporting myself with a teaching assistantship. I didn't like the field I was studying, economics, but loved teaching my sophmores. I don't give the answers but, rather, coach the individual to determine the answers on his/her own and then provide the theory as to why the answer is correct.
