I’ve had many years of practice in the tutoring field dealing with the fact that my brother has a learning disability. He likes to have fun and thinks that leaning is boring, so I try to make learning as fun as possible. Then I have my student on student tutoring when the students tutor each other. I think its better that way because most students don't really pay attention to their teachers but they take it better when it comes from another student. Sometimes its better because something you understand they may not understand and when you explain it to them then may be they will understand it a little better. I have been a volunteer tutor at a local elementary school during their aftercare program. I have also been a mentor through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Memphis to a first grader who had trouble with math (adding,subtracting, and multiplication). I have also helped fellow peers study for tests and the Reading and English sections of the ACT.
I believe a hands on approach to teaching a subject is the best way for a child to succeed. I believe that flashcards as well as games help younger children succeed in mastering a subject. Making a subject fun is key to helping a child tackle a tough subject. For older kids, practice tests are very helpful as well as flashcards. Encouragement and support is also an important part of mastery.

For math problems, I usually work problems and explain each step, and then have the student attempt to work a similiar one when they feel like they understand the problems. I try to be as helpful as possible while still focusing on the goal of total understanding for the student, as well as the ability to work a similiar problem independently with confidence. For paper writing, I would have the student brainstorm some ideas, and then together we could discuss the pro's and con's of the topic and organization choice, and provide tips on how we could better the assignment. I am willing to give as much or as little help as a parent would prefer, as good grades are one goal but the students mastery of the material is the most important.
