Grammar is one of my top subjects!

I have taught English/Language Arts for 3 years to 6-8 grade students, and I have worked as a tutor in various capacities for the past 7 years. This past summer I opened my own business: a program dedicated to teaching the craft of creative writing to kids. Currently, I am back in school at University of Dayton's online graduate program, with a goal of obtaining my Master's of Literacy.

A Little Bit About Me...

Most recently, I served as a short and long-term substitute in middle school Read 180 classes for Columbus City Schools. Read 180 is a course that strengthens reading skills. Prior to that, I worked as a tutor at Sylvan Learning Center. I facilitated tutoring sessions for small groups of students who presented various needs. I have, also, had the opportunity to teach at Columbus State Community College. There I had the privilege of providing instruction in three sections of a required English class. The goal for students was to produce a research paper written to persuade its audience. My first full-time teaching job, upon graduating from Ohio State, was as a middle and high school Language Arts teacher at a private school. I worked with students in grades six through nine. I absolutely love performing and any aspect of theatre. I love learning and growing in my theatre knowledge and experiences. My comments on tutoring Grammar : Native born English speaker with a love of the language.

I have experience in accounting and taxes, in various industries. I started out with the Big Four, passed the CPA exam and moved to privately held businesses. Some were large operations, and others were very small. Small businesses are my favorite because of the great variety of job duties. My name is Abel Araya and I love to write stories.

My teaching style is a bit unorthodox. It's easy to lecture through to the class, but it doesn't really engage the student to want to learn. When I was in college, a lot of my professors had styles that were much more intimate and personal with the students. I ask a lot of questions (open discussions) for students who I believe to be engaged with the classroom.
