Patient English and Drama Teacher

I am a Certified Teacher in the State of Washington and currently work as a Substitute Teacher for the Fife Public Schools. I have been a Substitute Teacher for local school districts and chose to work part time since I was caring for my elderly father who passed away in 2012. I enjoy teaching Elementary Education, Preschool, Drama, and English. I taught Drama for The City of Lakewood back in 2008 to 2010. We read and acted out plays, performed Improvisations, played theatre games, and had fun with many other activities.I also performed in plays at The Lakewood Playhouse and recently became a member of The Dramatists Guild of America. Helping students learn and learn how to grow

My teaching experience is broad across subjects and age levels. Learning and teaching excite me and I like to think that attitude rubs off on my students. It can be fun to learn, and even those subjects a student does not find enjoyable, can prove satisfying. I've taught middle school and high school, as well as at Bellevue College, Renton technical College, and North Seattle Community College. My own experiences include not just teaching, but also professional broadcasting, journalism (both broadcast and print newswriting, creative writing, editing, and reporting), writing a book, supervising employees as well as students, and poetry awards.
I like students to be comfortable, enjoy their experiences with me as much as possible, and learn not only the material they need to study, but also habits and practices that will help them with future studies.

I first tutored for two years during high school when a family friend asked me to help him teach kids chess at four elementary schools. I thoroughly enjoyed these experiences and developed a patient tutoring style that emphasizes critical listening. I continued to tutor in college, after a professor recommended me to the Central Washington University Writing Center. I trained with eighteen other students and was one of five selected to continue in practicum classes for the 2008-2009 school year. I went on to work as a paid writing consultant for the fall and winter quarters of the 2009-2010 school year and consulted 293 undergraduate and graduate students on writing from a variety of disciplines.
If students lack motivation or direction, it’s often because they are trying to perform an advanced task without basic skills. For example, many students know about the “five-paragraph ess ... read more

I like to instill in students a desire to learn. It makes it easier for them to have fun learning and easier for me to teach them new subjects. My first goal as a tutor, especially in reading and writing, is to connect with the student and find a topic that interests them. One of the biggest issues faced by struggling students is that they often don't identify with the problems. For a struggling reader this might mean not enjoying the subject matter of his/her book, and a for a student behind in math it may mean not seeing a real world application for the problems. Establishing a good relationship builds trust and also inspires the student to want to learn.
I spent most of my high school and college career honing my writing and reading ability, and through four years of English classes I have developed excellent writing skills. Additionally, my computer and internet knowledge has ... read more

I consider myself to be fun and entertaining and very approachable in my teaching methods. I never lose patience with students and believe that making mistakes is equally as important as making progress. All students can become better writers with a little hard work and a bit of desire to do so, and I can give them the tools to produce their best writing to date.
I have worked with at-risk children in the Chicago Public Schools system to teach a wide range of skills, primarily focusing on college readiness skills, essay and resume writing, ACT preparation, and remedial and advanced reading techniques. I am also highly qualified to teach speech and journalism, and have a year of experience in each as well. I feel I can make the most impact on students when I work with them one-on-one, and so I am excited to transition from the full-time teaching to the tutoring field.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am patient and thorough. Writing may be my forte, but I understand what it feels like to struggle with a particular subject. I know what I needed to be able to learn, and I try to give that to those who ask me for my help. I believe persistence, encouragement, and praise are the best means of helping a struggling student learn. Frustration will inevitably be felt by the student, but it is my responsibility to help the child work through that and absorb what I am helping him or her learn.
Writing is my forte and always has been. I have assisted my peers and those younger than me in their writing efforts in school a number of times and I held an editor position with the newspaper at Highline Community College. My responsibility there was to copy edit each story, as well as write my own articles. I have experience working with elementary school age youth through being a cam ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a very patient, hands-on style of tutor. I take the time and try to explain things to people who have a hard time understanding. I try to gage what the student is struggling with and also what they do understand, so I can quickly pinpoint their troubles and focus on the problem issue. Some kids need more explaining, others need a picture drawn out for them. I am good at finding what method people learn best with.
I graduated from the University of Washington last year with a BA in Journalism. I've also received an AA Degree from Highline Community College. Unlike many Journalism students, I have experience in arithmetic like algebra, pre-calculus and calculus. I've tutored students in math and writing, from first graders to college peers.

I am currently a paid tutor at Montlake Elementary School, assisting with language arts and math - at all levels. I love being in the classroom and helping students learn. When I am not in the classroom, I am a volunteer tutor (New Holly) assisting in math and reading. A Little Bit About Me...

My experience as a teacher began in my Church, I taught for 3 years in one of our Sunday School classes. My students ranged in age from 2-11 years old. After graduation from the University of Washington I was unsure if Education was what I wanted to do. So I chose a different path, and found out just how much I loved to teach. I decided to take the certification exam for Reading and Elementary Education I passed the Reading exam and missed the Elem. Ed by 5 points. I decided to go into Adult education to see if it was for me. I began teaching communications at Bates in November of 2009, I now teach Interpersonal Communications and a Human Relations course. I just completed training to become a certified online instructor.
I love to teach, and I believe my teaching style is very laid back. I like to allow my students to attempt things and try to figure it out with the information I ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

The cliche saying of "practice makes perfect" does not stray too far from the core of my teaching philosophy, however I do differ on a key point. I believe that practicing anything (whether or not it relates to academics) can only be done successfully if certain foundational skills are present; just as a baseball player, regardless of inherent talent, will fail if they do not know how to hold a bat correctly, so will an English student fail, regardless of the inherent quality of their thought processes, if they do not understand how to properly structure an essay. Practice must thus be accompanied with structured guidance in order to ensure that a strong foundation is in place.
